Usagiya — Local services in Tokyo

Dorayaki is a traditional Japanese confectionery. It is consist of two mini pancakes with sweet red bean paste inside the centre. Dorayaki is very popular in Japan which you can purchase it from any convenience stores and also the favourite food of the anime character Doraemon. Usagiya is quite a popular shop as there is long queue for me to purchase dorayaki from the shop and mostly in the shop are Japanese. Although the dorayaki is one of the best that I tasted so far but its still not great and lacking some of the flavour that I am expecting.

The dorayaki from this shop are fresh and without any preservative. The dorayaki also larger than normal dorayaki that you get elsewhere and you can eat whole red bean. The taste is not overly sweet and the pancake were moist and soft. Although, the dorayaki is larger and taste wise is good but I think its not great. The red bean content should be more and the pancake should have some sort...

The name in Japanese Usagiya is literally meant "Rabbit House / Place" and I think that's why the sweet items here have the rabbit shape or logo printed on them. I saw this place recommended by Shizuka Anderson on YouTube and decided to try myself when visiting Ueno Park. I tried the 3 recommended items i.e. the dorayaki, the rabbit bun and the waffle (cost ¥ 570). They're all good sweets using azuki beans or anko in Japanese, but my favorite is the dorayaki. They're good and have fluffy, perfect texture.

The shop staff would accommodate tourist customers who can't speak Japanese with limited communication. Basically, just point to the pictures or items and tell them how many you want using your fingers. I remember we paid in cash, so maybe they only accept cash...

Came on a Sunday morning and there weren’t many people and didn’t need to wait in line. An elderly lady served us. She was all smiles and very welcoming.

We got the set containing 3 of each including どらやき, 喜作最中 and うさぎまんじゅう.

All of them are very delicious, and very sweet. The うさぎまんじゅう is probably the least liked out of the three. The white part or the bread is a bit bland. It’s probably because I had them in order and ate the うさぎまんじゅう last.

I wanted to get the お団子 but it wasn’t available.

Overall, while it was quite delicious, it wasn’t strikingly overwhelming. Probably there are too many other similar snacks in Japan and they all taste quite similar, and all...
