Such a lovely, cozy, and relaxing place. I am sure it is pretty difficult to find such coffee shop. I have been to quite numbers of coffee shops in Japan and U.S., but this place is by far one of the top fives. It has unique atmosphere that makes you want to stay for as much as time allows you to do so. Half the seats were filled around 830 am, Saturday morning. I ordered egg toast and coffee. Coffee came first. There was steam coming out of the cup and the handle was thin that worried me to spill the hot liquid. The bean was crystal mountain, Cuba. It was much bitter than I expected, unlike typical coffee in Japan, it is not light (I have to make more visits to be sure about this.) When the dish arrived, I was amazed by the portion, toast was thick and had large volume of egg paste. As a 22 years old woman, I was barely able to finish my plate. There are croissant, cheese toast, and butter toast available as well, but the portion seemed enormous of all. By 9am, all the seats were filled by customers. On average, one or two people per group. Not a lot of tables, but wide enough to contain 30 customers at a time. Very...
Read moreWhat a lovely café! It was one of my favs that it prompted me to write such a lengthy review. Tucked away in a quiet corner but close enough to the Keisei Ueno station and Ameyoko Street. At 9.30am on a Monday, we walked in to the last few available table so I didn't need to wait though it got busier very quickly after that. You're welcomed with the fantastic smell of coffee. There's a breakfast set menu and Ala carte menu available. We ordered the Croque Madame sandwich (yum!) and an egg toast. Their bread is so so fluffy and delicious! Toasted to perfection. We also ordered a Medium Roast hand drip coffee (my fav!) and a café latte. What I observed in Tokyo so far, Black coffee is always served with a small side of milk and maybe this is just a personal preference but lattes are always too milky. Service is warm but prepare to wait ten minutes for food. Worth the wait though! Hope to be back...
Read moreCaffe Lapin is everything you want it to be, the epitome of classic, unchanged, original, and it's awesome to see so many of these old school coffee houses still survive. About the only thing "missing" is the cigarette smoke, and I use that term with a sense of nostalgia more than a lack of enjoyment.
Wide variety of coffees, hand picked as most are, this is not a place to grab a quick cup. The espresso is wonderful, the food options very limited and exceptionally simple yet good. Toast reigns supreme, you don't come here for a big meal, just a quick bite or some breakfast.
A fun stop, stuck in the past but...
