We rented five bikes to bike the carriage trails at Acadia NP. The bikes were not awful, and the gal checking us out did a good job adjusting them for each rider, but the shifters didn’t work very well on a couple of them. No biggie. What was a biggie was that a half-hour into our ride, the handlebars on my daughter’s bike came completely loose, swung upside down, and only through the intervention of her guardian angel did she avoid a crash and injury. I called AB, and they said they would send a new bike right away, but that I had to ride back to the trail head for the bike. I asked that they send a guy to me to tighten the bracket, but they said no…I had to ride the bike back a half-hour to get a new bike. So I did, very slowly and constantly fighting handlebars that would not stay up and wanted to pitch me head over teakettle. Very unenjoyable. This exercise put me an hour behind my family. When I met the guy, I asked if he could drive me and the bike to the Jordan Pond House to catch me up with my family. No go, he said, as his insurance wouldn’t allow a passenger in his vehicle. OK, I said, call your insurance agent and get a one-day rider to your policy; it’ll take five minutes. No way, he said, it doesn’t work like that, and besides, I have a business to run and no way am I going to take the the time; sorry you're behind your party, but there is nothing I can do. He said he wanted to work with me and then repeated several times that he had done all he could. No, I said, you’ve done all you’re willing to do, but not all you could do. Then he recited the boiler plate on the release I'd signed, that he wasn’t obligated to do anything but provide me a replacement bike, there would be no refunds, and he had to be going. I promised him reviews on the major review sites, and so here it is. Summary: not a clip joint, but the bikes are only so-so with something less than conscientious preventative maintenance, and if you have a problem don’t expect them to lift one finger more than the...
Read moreWarning - don't make a mistake on your order, or you won't see the slightest refund. We booked a ranger-led tour, and I have 2 kids under 3, so we thought this would be a great tour to take them on in bike trailers. When making the reservation they had tag-a-longs as an option. Not being an avid biker, we thought that's what the bike trailers were called, so we booked accordingly. When we got to the tour and saw what a tag-a-long was, there was no way my kids could ride on these as they were actual bikes attached to the bigger bike, so our kids would have to know how to ride and balance, and that wasn't possible. So we never got to take the tour, when we stopped by the shop to see if we could get any money back, the only thing we were offered was bike rental for the day, but we didn't feel comfortable riding bikes from their location back to the park and navigating without any guidance, especially with two children in trailers through Bar Harbor, and there was no understanding what so ever from the owner. There are no pictures posted of what the tag-a-long looks like and no description in the booking screen. I was told it was my fault for not calling and asking questions and booking online instead. The owner showed no concern for us as customers and was more concerned about the "financial hit" he would get if he even considered giving us any refund. Extremely disappointed in not being able to attend the tour, we saw the ranger before the tour when we were trying to figure out the bike situation and she was lovely. Our loss will hopefully help someone else out from making the same mistake and wasting about $300 as there were 4 adults in my party that...
Read more**Renter beware. We wanted to rent e-bikes and explore Acadia National Park and the surrounding areas. We are very experienced mtn bikers and also own our own e-bikes. The scenery was beautiful and well worth the rental. Unfortunately, I had non-stop shifting issues due to an improperly adjusted high limit screw. My bike would not stay in gear. The chain repeatedly dropped from the smallest cog and became wedged. Despite intentionally avoiding shifts into the two top gears, I kept having to stop and adjust the chain and derailleur back into a working alignment. These things can occasionally happen. What was disappointing was that when we returned the bikes 90 minutes early, very frustrated with completely greasy hands, we were still charged full price for a bike that was improperly tuned and mechanically unsound. That was preventable and solvable. The chance to do the right thing and offer any compensation in an effort to mitigate this poor experience was there but not taken. The shop managers are very nice people who I suspect don't have the authority to resolve these situations and work with the customer. Upon our return, we explained our experience and even asked to use a restroom to clean the grease from my hands. No apology, acknowledgment, or concession was offered. If you're a tourist coming off a cruise or an out of towner and want to do business with a company that values your experience, I suggest that you look at other options. Acadia Bike Rentals / Acadia Bike is not the right fit. They'll gladly take your money without worrying about the bike's ability to perform and the experience...
