What a hidden gem! My children and I were exploring Bar Harbor and had intended to visit the Abbe Museum, unfortunately it closed on the weekends. My daughter caught sight of a welcoming, open door and asked "Is that a library??" Indeed it was and we headed inside. I was not prepared for such a charming space! The main library was like walking into one of the great libraries of Scotland just in minuture. The Children's area was sunny and well stocked with books, toys and games. My son built Lego while I enjoyed picture books about Maine I have never seen anywhere else. There were lots of community events advertised and even a talk going on that evening. Everyone I spoke to, librarians and patrons, were friendly and proud of this place.

One simply did not expect to see such a grand and luminous library along a major road in Bar Harbor (think lobsters, hikers and tourists!). The main hall is rectangular and has wooden stairs to the second floor stacks from all four corners. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, with plenty of comfortable seating. On the center tables are historical newspaper collection about the history of BH and MDI. I highly recommend everyone to come spend an hour (or a day) in this amazing space.

I would rate this Library higher if the librarians respected one of the most characteristic features of a library...shhhhh! I visit this library often and the librarians chat CONSTANTLY. And not even in hushed tones, but in conversational voices that carry throughout the room(sometimes even shouting to one another). Nor have I have heard a loud visitor, on the phone or otherwise, been reminded to lower their voices. Other than that, it's a beautiful historic building with a great selection of books in great location. One of the loudest libraries I have ever been too, it could be compared more to a cafe rather than a library. Also, has a lack of places to plug into on the entrance floor, downstairs has more...

The best place to relax in Bar Harbor. Need a nap? Find a private nook up in the stacks, or in the cool basement when it's hot outside, and connect to the fastest free WiFi network in Bar Harbor, upwards of 500Mbps on 5Ghz WiFi. Then close your eyes and take a snooze while listening to your playlist. You'll sleep like a baby and nobody will interrupt you unless it's closing time. Library silence is a special kind of quiet. If you need to temporarily remove yourself from the hustle and bustle and traffic of summertime Bar Harbor, there's no better place than the beautiful indoor setting of the Jesup library for a quiet remote work session, Zoom, color printer access or power nap. Clean, public...
