What a hidden gem! My children and I were exploring Bar Harbor and had intended to visit the Abbe Museum, unfortunately it closed on the weekends. My daughter caught sight of a welcoming, open door and asked "Is that a library??" Indeed it was and we headed inside. I was not prepared for such a charming space! The main library was like walking into one of the great libraries of Scotland just in minuture. The Children's area was sunny and well stocked with books, toys and games. My son built Lego while I enjoyed picture books about Maine I have never seen anywhere else. There were lots of community events advertised and even a talk going on that evening. Read moreI would rate this Library higher if the librarians respected one of the most characteristic features of a library...shhhhh! I visit this library often and the librarians chat CONSTANTLY. And not even in hushed tones, but in conversational voices that carry throughout the room(sometimes even shouting to one another). Nor have I have heard a loud visitor, on the phone or otherwise, been reminded to lower their voices. Other than that, it's a beautiful historic building with a great selection of books in great location.
