I'm going to be brutally honest here, BHGT was not off to a great start. I first booked my tour for October 12th as a birthday present. I was so excited, I had never heard of a picnic ghost tour before, out of all the ghost tours I've done and I've done a lot. My directions were clear, meet at 26 Mount desert Street and the tour leaves from there. I was even there with another couple who also agreed, all the information sent to us said to meet at the above mentioned location. So it was EXTREMELY disappointing to me when no one showed up. I was so incredibly upset. I called and no one answered. I was able to message someone on Facebook and they apologized for the miscommunication and to make it right, they not only refunded my ticket but also gave me TWO free tickets to the event for the next weekend! So, I grabbed a friend and we went on the tour and it was good. The story telling was good, our narrator/host was very nice and super knowledgeable about local lore which I super appreciated. But to be very honest, we (my friend and I) didn't think it was worth the $69 (per person) plus tax price tag. It was a basic charcuterie board, apple cider and s'mores. I was expecting more. Now, that's not to say you shouldn't go, it was a fun experience and I WOULD recommend this to a friend, we just thought the price was a little steep for what you were getting. But, it's a local business and times are tough so I don't mind helping a local shop out. If things had gone to plan on the original night I wanted to do the tour, they'd be getting 3 stars but I give this four stars because the business really went out of their way to make things right with me and that didn't go unnoticed, I super appreciate that. I also helped build a fire (twice) and joked around about taking a blanket home for all my hard work and they let me! Super chill and great. All in all, help a local business out, this business also supports indigenous people and that's really important, too. Just make sure if you go to the phantom feast, know where you're going!! It's not in bar harbor, it's in southwest harbor!!! All in all, I would book again and I recommend others to book, too because at the end of the day, you're supporting a small, local business and indigenous peoples and for a cause like that, I don't mind spending the extra money. Thank you, BHGT for going above and beyond to make things right. It's hard to come back from a first impression, but indeed you did. I'll definitely book again (so long as you update those where-to-meet...
Read moreI adore ghost tours, for multiple reasons. First off, I do not believe in ghosts (I it’s simply my opinion, so let’s just move on and not argue about it) but I always love a good walking ghost tour for multiple reasons. Oe, you get to walk around a new city and see places you otherwise might not. Two, you get to hear some good stories- whether or not there are ghosts as a result (spoiler, there aren’t) you are still getting historical information- who lived and died where, what happened, what led up to the death, etc. Third, you get to interact with other travelers on the tour and a local who is leading the tour. The guide had a great costume on, and was very informative. We actually tried to go twice- the first time, it started to rain before the tour started. We tried to tough it out, but it was POURING about 20 minutes into the tour. We had a baby in a stroller- a not-waterproof stroller I might ad, and our guide was sweet enough to offer us to reschedule, since it was clearly not letting up, and it was a bit hard. We left and returned the next evening. We started on a different route the following day, and saw the interior of the old theater, walked to the waterfront, saw an old graveyard and church, and an old mansion. The stories were captivating and I loved hearing about the history of the town. The guide clearly loved Br Harbor and had done a lot of reading and research, and was well versed in the tales she was telling. After we spoke to our guide and heard about her life, her studies, etc- my favorite part. Not wanting to take up too much of her time, we left for our yurt, but I will always remember the tales of that evening and the sights we took in. I recommend this- especially for people who want to explore but are timid to go on their own, and who want a slower paced...
Read moreAgree with one of the other recent reviews...the girl leading the tour was a bit too dramatic and just made the whole thing seem too cheesy. Also, we were disappointed that we didn't actually get to see much. Sure, we didn't see any paranormal stuff and that was to be expected, but I mean we would walk to the haunted mansion and the guide would talk about the hauntings, but we couldn't go inside and see any of the rooms. Same thing with the tunnels underneath the art deco theater (we stopped outside by the door to them but couldn't go in), and the point along the docks that are supposedly haunted (we stopped in the middle of the park and talked about it rather than going to the spot itself). It was really just more of a long walk where we listened to a storyteller who was just so-so. Much less involved than other ghost tours we've been on. Not as much history as I would have liked either. I'd skip...
