I was saddened on my visit to Black Mountain to see that front and center on Town Hardware's check-out desk they are selling bootlegged (totally illegal!) DVDs of Disney's Song of the South which Disney has specifically pulled from sales because it represents oppression of black culture. I am an amateur animation historian and understand the level of beauty and craft which went into that film. However the message it sends for a business proprietor to go out of their way to sell illegal copies of a film that in our age has come to represent racism means only one thing. Town Hardware is making a statement that they are not willing to culturally move forward and that they support the mindset of holding on to painful memories for others because they think letting go somehow infringes on their rights. Disney took the film out of circulation because they believed it should be. My visit to Town Hardware was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise great day in downtown...
Read moreCame to town to see my mom and little brother, we decided to walk around Black Mountain a bit and check out the little stores. Stumbled upon this place at around 5:20 and knowing they closed at 6, we decided to take a quick peek inside. The store has lots of fun little items and we had all picked things to buy. At around 5:48, we were done and about to go check out when an older lady comes to us and says, "we're closing. Please make your way to the door" before I could say anything, she repeated what she said, then walked around a shelf but proceeded to stare at us through the cracks to make sure we left. We were offended so we put our stuff back, headed towards the door, and she followed right behind us and locked the door as soon as we stepped out. I have never been treated like that before....
Read moreI went in to buy a thermostat for my home. I was directed to an elderly man that was working there. I had my old one with me, he assured me that the one he sold me would work. I went home and discovered that it would in fact not work. I went back to town hardware about 10 minutes later with my receipt to exchange it. They treated me so rudely, because the package had been open, the lady asked how she could resell it, and the elderly man told me maybe I should call an electrician....I spent 40 bucks on something I can't even use..and now I won't have heat till I can afford another one.
