People from underrepresented ethnic and racial groups tend to rate poor customer service less negatively than white people do, according to peer review research however, people of color get so used to discrimination in stores they don’t always notice bad customer service.
My sisters and I had the most unpleasant experience at Tyson Furniture in Black Mountain. One of my sisters just moved from Texas and needs to furnish her entire home. I, thinking highly of what I have heard about Tyson's wanted to take her there first thinking it would be a one stop shop for her entire home.
As we walked in, I held the door open for my sisters and my niece. Immediately behind us was another couple and I held the door open for them. Two employees jumped up from behind the counter and ran straight for the couple behind us to help them. I head them say, "hello, welcome to Tyson's have you been here before?". We waited patiently for the same greeting.
We waited almost 40 minutes near the front in hopes that someone, anyone, would assist us. We walked around looking at furniture thinking that surely one of the 8 associates behind the counter would look up long enough from their not so busy day to at least make eye contact??!!
It was a foregone conclusion that Mr. Tyson has an office culture abhorrent to any type of exceptional customer service found elsewhere. The fact that we may be darker than the white couple that came in after us was blatantly obvious. Their behavior was beyond rude. No need to dig deep to find what matters most to them!
As an established woman of color, yes, olive is a color…I not only find their behavior disgusting, but it tells me/us that it is their standard operating procedure for their day-to-day interactions with people…. which makes this organization one of the worst places I have ever been. I will scream from the rooftops my negative experience in hopes of saving anyone else from such poor manners and humiliation!
Mr. Tyson, you ought to be incredibly ashamed of your culture especially in today's climate. I understand the world is complicated but good customer...
Read moreDo not buy from Tyson unless you know exactly what you want and they have it in stock. We went in looking for a modern style sofa for a home with two young children. They had to special order the longer length of the sofa we wanted, and when it was delivered it was not even close to the dimensions of the one we saw in the showroom. The clean modern look had been traded for an overstuffed traditional sofa. I called our salesperson, and she told us it would break in and look more like what we wanted. Skeptical, we hung onto it. Turns out she was just hoping to wait us out past their return period... which she did successfully. The sofa still looked different from what we wanted, but at least we thought it would wear well. Within six months it was covered in pilled fabric. More disheartening is the fact that even water stains the farbric. We told her we had small children and wanted something easy to clean, but the fabric can only be cleaned with a solvent based cleanser that normal humans can’t buy on planet Earth. We spent so much money on this piece of garbage that we would feel like fools selling it. And it was so worn out looking after six months that we wouldn’t get much for it anyway. Again, if they have something you like on the sales floor and you can take it home, it might be another story. Unfortunately, if you go in looking for help you will be sold garbage and then manipulated over the phone to keep it past the return policy date. I will never visit Tyson again unless it’s to dump this sofa on their doorstep for them...
Read moreUPDATE: After further discussions with Tyson, they have agreed to send a new couch that matches what we originally intended to order. We are satisfied with the response.
Original review: My wife custom ordered an 85" couch specifically sized to fit a window and Tyson delivered a 75" couch instead. Upon delivery she immediately noticed that it was short and called her sales rep who informed her that because the couch had skinny arms she should have known that it would be 10" short. Their position is that, with custom furniture, the customer should reference the manufacturer specs for each component and add it all up. She felt duped as this was never mentioned when she ordered the couch and the purchase order specified that it would be 85". I called and spoke to the store owner and explained that we expected the couch to match what was on the purchase order and that that I wanted them to make it right. The owner proceeded to offer me a "solution" whereby I could return the couch and order the 85" couch, at a higher cost, plus I would pay $300 shipping (even though it was $150 the first time), and I would pay another $69 +/- to treat the fabric with guardsman. I had them put it in writing and noticed that they are also making me eat the $69 I spent treating the fabric on the short couch. I cancelled the order and now I am having to fight to get my money back as they are charging me a $300 cancellation fee. They have taken zero responsibility for the mistake and are putting all the extra costs on me to...
