I've lived in BMT six years. I've been in this store to browse and purchase things on several occasions and every time the staff are so unfriendly and just plain rude.
Do you want to buy a Black Mountain T-shirt from the nicest people in town who are just around the corner? Then take your business to C.W. Moose who have a larger selection of custom t-shirts and other BMT items and extremely friendly, polite and helpful staff. They have super cute shoes too.
If you're desperate for a Patagonia puffer vest at full MSRP, then stay at "Take a Hike," where they appear to literally want you to "take a hike" as in "get out of here."
The icing on the cake for me is that today I spent just over $50 on 2 items and the cashier said "That's only $53.45" to tell me my total. I have worked in retail and never in my experience have I or any co-worked used that phrase to tell a customer their total. That's "ONLY" $50. Sorry, even with inflation, $50 takes some American's 5 hrs to earn IN THIS TOWN. What a rude way to accept someone's business. I hope that isn't the norm in this place but I will say that unfriendly staff has been my encounter every single time I've set foot in here in the last 6 years.
So why did I give 2 stars? Because they do carry cute stuff (clothes, shoes, etc) and they're the only place in town that has certain items you may not want to drive to AVL to find. But to them: PLS STOP acting like you're doing us a favor. Stores don't exist without patrons, so maybe treat ppl like you...
Read moreOnly generously giving 'Take A Hike' two stars because our experience within the store was great and I fully understand the weight of Google reviews for businesses. After our store visit, however, our merchandise return situation was handled horribly and by the owner himself, no less. After patronizingly arguing and saying the item's return policy was displayed appropriately, and then discovering later in the conversation that he was wrong, he still chose not to honor the return AND also tactlessly attempted to turn it into a marketing ploy for future customers (you can read the entire conversation within their Facebook business reviews if you like).
Admitting fault yet refusing to take action doesn't solve anything or make things right. Customer Service 101 here. As an Asheville native, I cannot explain how enormously upsetting and disappointing this was to see from a local...
Read moreGreat selection, including equipment & books. Good sales prices on the clothing. But the real reason to go is that these guys are nice. As a non-svelte middle-aged woman, I've encountered hiking store clerks elsewhere who seemed unhappily surprised that I'd come in, as tho my presence might hurt their image (I don't review that sort). But here, a young hiker-clerk showed me the walking poles I'd come after with patience & no condescension. Now I'll be able to go after some tougher trails! 6/2022: They're still a terrific store with helpful workers. Now I have a wonderful new pair of trail boots. They'll...
