SUMMARY
I’ve been going to Ethos Fitness + Performance for the past eight months, training one-on-one with Anthony, and my experience has been nothing short of exceptional. I normally don’t write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so given the outstanding experience I have with them. The staff and facilities are top notch, and I highly recommend their services to anyone looking to achieve their fitness goals.
-- BACKGROUND
My search for personal training began when post-COVID, I decided I needed to become more serious with building habits to support a healthier lifestyle; working from home had detrimental impacts to my posture.
Options for personal training in Boston, particularly in the South End, left me wanting, especially from commercial gyms. Either the facilities felt cramped, or services provided weren’t exactly what I was looking for.
Ethos was the perfect fit for what I was searching for.
-- FACILITIES
The training area is very spacious and open. There are large glass windows throughout the facility that let in a lot of natural light. This is a far departure from other workout areas that feel claustrophobic. The space is spotless and the same is true for the bathrooms.
The equipment is new or very well maintained, and they have a variety of options, from the standard: kettlebells, dumbbells, barbells, cable machines, etc., to the niche: safety squat bars and grip bars. There’s a lack of cardio equipment (a stationary bike or two), but quite frankly, with the training programs they offer, there really isn’t much of a need for them.
For those that need it, there’s a variety of parking options available. Make sure to check their website for more information at risk of getting towed.
-- TRAINING
They offer various training programs: Personal, Semi-Private and Power hour Plus(+) [individual training]. Quite recently, they have begun offering training and coaching on Powerlifting. At one point, they did offer virtual training, but I’m not sure if that is still available.
Because I’ve only done personal training with Anthony, I can only comment on how extraordinary and knowledge he is when it comes to coaching. His passion for fitness comes through and through, and with his guidance, he has been instrumental in helping me better my health and fitness goals.
Not only does Anthony take into consideration past injuries and workout preferences when creating his workout plan, he is attentive and inquisitive during the workouts to best maximize the workout based on how you are feeling on the day.
-- COMMUNITY
As professional and focused it is during training, the staff does lighten the mood with friendly banter. Everyone at Ethos is incredibly friendly.
You can certainly tell they strive to not only build a community within Ethos, but also to extend their community beyond their walls. They will often have fundraisers, collaborate with local businesses and host events to foster a sense of community.
-- Overall, I highly recommend Ethos Fitness +...
Read moreEthos is the best! I love that the trainers push you hard, but they always stop and take the time out to make sure that you have proper form, that you're using the right muscles, and that you aren't going to hurt yourself.
I basically never worked out in my life until 2.5 years ago. I hate running. I also hate biking and I never thought that I would ever consider myself "fit". I used to train at a large chain gym and the quality of the training varied a lot depending on who you got. While the trainers I happened to get there were good, it was nothing like the level of attention and quality of training that I get at Ethos.
In a really short amount of time I've learned how to lift/push/pull crazy heavy weights. I dropped a full pant size without ever focusing on losing weight. The trainers at Ethos push me to get better every week and they're great at helping me set goals and then crush them. I also love that they offer 1:1 training and group classes because I'm definitely competitive and when I see other people around me crushing goals, it makes me want to push myself even harder.
In 8 short weeks Gerilyn took me from no pullups to 1-2 pullups. I honestly surprised myself at how strong I had gotten. I really thought it would be one of those goals that was like "oh yeah 6 months from now maybe...", but Gerilyn pushed me to make it a very near-term reality. Her careful and nuanced training made all the difference! I would definitely recommend her as a trainer. She has an awesome positive vibe and it's great to see that at the end of each workout she checks in with you to see "what your takeaway" from the days work is. It helps me remember to focus on all the finer things she's pointing out when I keep practicing moves on my own.
Basically this gym is awesome, Gerilyn is awesome, and Ethos makes me feel great. I walk away with a whole bunch more confidence every...
Read moreEthos has the friendliest and most professional people. I started training with Matt at Ethos half a year ago and I am already so much stronger than ever. I have always been active and outdoors but my upper body was very weak- was never able to do a single pushup despite trying for many years, and it also limited me from progressing on sports I enjoy like swimming and surfing. I started to think that my body is just not built for that, but I am so glad I gave it one more try at Ethos. Matt (and every coach at Ethos really) is very good at tailoring the workout program to individual's need. I have never seen a single athlete at Ethos doing the same program as mine. Matt would also make adjustments to the day's workout based on how I am feeling, and with that I hit a lot of milestones without being pushed over the edge. Ethos also takes a holistic approach to health - Matt would ask about my diet, my sleep etc which I really appreciate. I got some very useful advice on diet and it definitely helps with my progression. My first gym goal was to hit 1 pushup and 1 chinup after the first consultation session (it is free btw so everyone should take advantage of it). I thought it was impossible and more like a joke but he proved me wrong. By the third month without even noticing, I am doing my first 5 pushups after some 20 years!! Also weight is never a concern for me, but I start to see my physique changing. I gained more muscles and got rid of my tummy and love handler. Nice side effects to have. I would definitely recommend Ethos to anyone looking for a supportive, fun and resourceful environment to get stronger and healthier. And for those who don't, you should still go because Molly the dog is cute and Matt is known for his great music taste and Halloween...
