Captain Barry’s Tour is a unique, and fun-filled experience! The vessel is a standard pontoon boat, but that’s not why you’re here. The adventure started off with us cruising the back bay, and seeing a pod of dolphins. It was really exciting, and they put on a show. From there Barry shared much of the history of the area; the geography, and some fun facts. At the stops, Barry had the kids on board searching for crabs, snails, shells, and oysters. Barry showed off his crab trap, which allows the kids to examine, and hold a live crab (pretty big!). Barry also got raw oysters, shucked them, and everyone who wanted one on board got one. The weather was perfect, and the water was calm. It was an interesting way to explore nature in a way I’d not done before. It was our first time at Chincoteague, and this really made it memorable. Barry’s a great storyteller, educator, fun, and funny. Highly...
Read moreThe ideal way to learn about the "real" Chincoteague is with Captain Barry. It was awfully convenient that Barry's boat fits six since that's the size of our family. Wow, what a character! This guy's done it all, seen it all on the island. From eating a fresh oyster straight from the cove to plucking snails off reeds and watching as they scurry (slowly) down our deck chairs, to wading out on a sand bar to discover amazing sea life, to pulling up crab traps and learning how to handle the creatures without getting pinched, this was definitely the highlight of our vacation. Sure, there's no ponies on this boat tour, but you trade that for an up-close and hands-on tour that will plaster a smile on your face the whole time. Knowledgeable, funny, and motivating, Captain Barry is an ideal guide if you want to get your feet and hands dirty and learn something new during...
Read moreWe took a Captain Barry eco-cruise several days ago. Captain Barry clearly has a lot of experience educating and working with children. He himself is both a father and a grandfather, and it shows. My daughter enjoyed the cruise, and Barry kept her engaged the entire time. Whether we were collecting shells, catching blue crabs or collecting fiddler crabs, Barry was hands on with my daughter.
Post our cruise, she commented how much she liked Barry, and would likely have sailed with him all day if allowed.
He also has his own unique style and sense of humor. He plays classic movie anthems as he sets off to different locations, and my daughter and I really enjoyed that. Of three adults and one child on the cruise, we all had a good time, and the crab catching technique he taught us has a 100%...
