Derek saved my hair!

He is confident, skilled, naturally talented, funny...and who doesn't love a little eye candy while they get their hair done?!

I had the misfortune of a horrific haircut many moons ago - taking my long hair to a shoulder length mullet with chunks of 1-2 inch hair scattered throughout my head. Don't ask...it was devastating. Needless to say, I had to find another stylist. After a couple years of searching (and more bad haircuts), I finally found my savior. My hair was a confused mess on my first visit to Derek. Something to the tune of about 4 different hair cuts going on at once. He managed to bring peace and order to my hair :) As we all know, a woman's hair is a huge part of her identity. I feel like he restored mine. He's been doing my hair ever since (6+ years). I won't let anyone else touch it. In addition to the original mess that he saved me from, I have extremely thick, unruly, wavy hair. Everyone always wants to "thin" and "texturize" the hell out of it...leaving it looking choppy and uneven. Not Derek. He consistently transforms my hair into a smooth, perfectly even, connected and flowing thing of beauty...regardless of how I style it. This guy knows how to design hair! I went to see Derek for some color (highlights/balayage) on my newly short-do. The location is super adorable and clean, and he was very welcoming. He started the session with figuring out what I wanted and looked at the inspiration pictures. He then looked at my hair and very politely asked me if I'd like to clean up the look. I, of course, said yes--the stylist that cut it previously definitely tried his best, but I was having lots of trouble styling it. Some of the edges just didn't feel right, but I thought it was just me. Derek did a fabulous job of shaping my new haircut...that was BEFORE he did the color. I feel like he got what I wanted--I wanted a natural, low-key color to add depth and dimension, but nothing chunky. He coached me on some of the color terminology and got to work. His technique is true art!! I could not be happier with my haircut and color. It's exactly what I wanted and needed without knowing it! I will definitely be going to see him for cuts and color. He responds very quickly to calls and texts and is a great conversationalist! Highly highly...

Basically, Derek is excellent.

I have had my share of bad hair experiences - from rocking an 80's chili bowl haircut as a child, to much worse. Let's just say - even after reading Derek's great Yelp reviews, I still had some major trepidation when I first sat down with him, solely based on the fact that scissors and I were about to cross paths once again!

It didn’t take long to see that Derek is kind, respectful, and caring - he listened so well, and made it clear that he wasn’t going to do anything crazy or allow miscommunication to happen (he even asked my permission before he touched my hair - which meant so much!) Aside from being a gentleman, Derek is also a true artist. He left no doubt in my mind that he truly knows what he is doing, and takes pride in his work - all while also being humble and respecting your vision if you just aren’t ready for a dramatic change (yet)!
