I brought my late grandfathers wedding ring, a family heirloom, in to Jewelers Workbench to get sized down from a size 12 to a 7 and 1/2. The jeweler measured my current ring as I did not know the size at the time. I went to pick up the ring when it was ready and to my shock they had reduced the size to a 5 and 1/2. I also noticed there was a surprisingly small amount of extra gold left, considering the ring had been reduced by 7 and 1/2 sizes. There was roughly an inch of extra material. I explained that a mistake had been made and they offered to resize the ring again. I picked up the ring in when it was ready and to my shock there was no extra material at all left of my 18k gold, family heirloom, ring that had been reduced by almost 5 sizes. The explanation given to me was that every time they cut the ring a small amount of material is lost. It went from a size 12 to a 7 and 1/2, their blade would have to be at least a centimeter wide for that to be remotely true. Well, at least I had the ring in almost the right size (it is a little smaller than I would like it but all the extra material is gone so there is nothing that can be done as it has a complex pattern on it.) I wore it for 1 hour and one of the weaved gold details was suddenly sticking straight out of the ring, sharply. I went back to Jewelers Workbench and explained the situation, and the jeweler (the old man that runs the shop, made the initial sizing mistake, etc.) tried to charge me to have the repair done. I refused to pay and he said he would do it anyway. Not shockingly the work was done sloppily. No one ever apologized, this seems to be standard procedure for them. They did a phenomenal job on resetting my rings! It was originally 2 diamond rings I had been wanting to put together to create a one of a kind piece that represents my taste. A generous sized 3 stone princess cut diamond ring and a 2.5 ct pear cut diamond solitaire. I brought in my rings with my idea, and they were happy to help. They swapped the center princess cut stone in its setting with the big solitaire diamond, also with its setting.
