Nestled behind the Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit, Parker's Alley is a pedestrian promenade that features a carefully chosen assortment of retail stores, cafes, and public artwork that showcase the city's spirit of entrepreneurship. However, there is more historical importance to its name. The alley celebrates Thomas Parker, one of the first Black proprietors in Detroit, who, after the terrible fire of 1805, purchased Lot 70 in Section 7 for just $1 in 1809. Parker, Elizabeth Cooper, Pompey Abbott, and Hannah Ashley were among those who shaped Detroit's early Black community, which was essential to the city's social and economic growth. The alley was formally renamed in 2019 to honor Parker's legacy, and a historical marker now informs tourists about this little-known period of Detroit history.
