This is the coolest place we have been to in a while. A great Speakeasy behind a functioning barbershop!
You enter into the barbershop, and if you know the ”password” they will open the secret bookcase to let you into the bar (hint…go to their Instagram page and you will find it). Great atmosphere, dark, wonderfully furnished, and truly feels like you can just hang out and relax. The staff is very friendly, and constantly checks on you, and there are lots of places to sit with 2 actual bar areas.
The cocktail menu is fun with lots of options, we wound up having a “Hemingway Part 1” Daiquiri and another fun cocktail, the “Dr. Frederick Fronkensteen” The daiquiris were excellent, a perfect blend of rum, lime juice, and simple syrup. Isn’t a true Hemingway daiquiri that includes maraschino liquor, grapefruit juice, and no simple syrup, but I think the name is just a play on books and names. It was outstanding…would highly recommend.
They do have a very small snack selection, either nuts or mini corn dogs lol! We ordered the corn dogs, they were actually good, a few small bite sized pieces.
We found this on our first night in Durango, and would up making it our end-of-day favorite hangout. Perfect ending for the day!
Will I go back…most definitely! Would I...
Read moreIf an unknowing patron were to walk into the Bookcase and Barber off the street they would find a simple barbershop that gives wonders haircuts and has an impressive collection of books for a place that cuts hair. However, someone who is more in the know has simply to speak a secret pass phrase to initiate what is the beginning of an overall wonderful drinking experience.
After speaking the correct password (which changes every few months) to the doorman, the bookcase opens to a 1920's-style speakeasy. The bartenders are dressed in suspenders and dress shirts, the walls are lined with clippings of prohibition-era newspapers and other memorabilia, and the bar is stocked with an impressive collection of all type of liquor.
While you can order practically any cocktail you could think of, the B&B provides menus put together by their incredibly talented staff and which change seasonally. Whether you order something classic or a B&B original cocktail nothing you have here will fail to impress. Even a drink as simple as a Screwdriver is made with fresh oranges juiced by hand in front of your eyes.
Simply put the Bookcase and Barber surely is a gem in what downtown Durango has to offer - one you will need to try for yourself to truly understand and enjoy the...
Read moreAn absolutely fantastic establishment.Their large and sophisticated drink menu covers all the prohibition classics, with plenty of twists and variety along the way. Being a speakeasy, The decor of this small establishment fit the period very nicely, from bent wire edison lamps to 19th century books, an excellent hardwood bar and swanky jazz playing in the background.
I went on a Saturday night where there was a wait list (its small so call ahead) but was seated at the bar with a lovely Bartender, Bridget. I asked her to give me something Gin based but off the menu and without hesitation started working on Colorado take on a Southside. She was able to explain the history of most drinks she was making, while maintaining a full bar of happy customers with ease. Everything was made from scratch, with an excellent level of detail going into every drink.
Drinks range $7-12, but are absolutely worth every penny. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a classy, adventurous and...
