MAKE A RESERVATION ASK TO SIT ON THE PATIO I DON'T HAVE A THIRD THING BUT I FEEL LIKE LISTS SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 3 ITEMS.
Okay, now that we've got the most important bits out of the way, let's talk.
Our dinner at Ken and Sue's was fantastic. We were in Durango for only one night, so our dinner choice was pretty important. We'd read good reviews and it was also recommended by the front desk agent at our hotel so we decided to give it a try.
We had a very early reservation (5pm) because we're the early to bed, early to rise types. While we were waiting to check in, a woman who had a 6:45pm reservation for an inside table asked if she could change it to the patio and she was told no, it wasn't possible. So if you want to sit outside, hell, even if you don't want to, do it anyway and make your reservation for the patio. You'll thank me. They have tents outside so you won't be sitting in the direct sun and in the winter they have heaters.
One of the great things that they do for those seated outside is that they stagger the location of the guests. What this means is that you'll be seated and then the next party will be seated in a different area, the next party in a different area, etc. So you won't immediately be surrounded by other guests. In our case, it was almost an hour before anyone was seated right next to us so it gave the dinner a more intimate feeling.
Our server, Lauren, was very warm and welcoming and took a few minutes to talk with us about where we were from, how was our vacation going, etc. She provided fantastic service and great recommendations. After listening to the specials, we ended up sharing the stuffed chicken breast, and had the molten chocolate cake and the house-made cherry cheesecake ice cream for dessert.
The stuffed chicken was a bone-in breast and was perfectly cooked. It had a bed of greens that was a great complement to the rich sauce and the potatoes were also delicious. The desserts were also very well done and we found if you mixed the molten chocolate cake with the cherry cheesecake ice cream you had an even better Black Forest-esque dish. Another mention should be the breadsticks they serve. The bread they bring out included some very tasty crispy breadsticks, so be ready to ask for seconds of those.
Overall, we were extremely happy with our time at Ken & Sue's and wouldn't hesitate to return should we be in...
Read moreNOT what it was as Ken and Sue's. I ordered the special, which was scallops, and they were NOT filling enough. The chef should have put them over pasta NOT with a side of mashed potatoes. I tried to order a salad with my entree but was advised by our server that ALL of the salads were full meals. Why not offer a side salad? Or a starter salad? Or serve a vegetable with the scallops? Also, almost all of the meals were steaks. NOT very creative. Granted, I hadn't been to Ken and Sues since 2019, but the food used to be so interesting and innovative. Now, its just like any other resturant. But the worst part was the service. We arrived for a 7pm reservation and didn't leave until AFTER 9:30pm. We were traveling, tired, and had kids with us. We did NOT want to leave the resturant that late. But the service was soooo sloooow!!! Our table was not ready when we arrived. We ordered fairly quickly, but our server acted as if he'd never waited a table in his life. Everybody else at the table got their cocktails and mocktails right away, but after 20 mins, I had to ask why my Perrier hadn't shown up yet. Then, the waiter brought me the bottle of Perrier and a tiny wine glass with no ice. Who in this country serves sparkling water with no ice? I had invited family from out of state, and it was quite frankly an embarrassment. I hoped their food was better than mine, despite the poor service, but I don't think it was. Everyone in my party complained about their food in one way or another. One said the Porter House was too salty and definitely NOT the advertised 24 ounces. Another disliked the curry. And another was astonished at how large her salad was, given that Colorado has one of the lowest obesity rates in the country. If I weren't so concerned about germs, I would have eaten some of her salad as I left hungry. All around, it was a bizarre experience and a huge disappointment after many years of frequenting Ken and Sue's. Get it together 636 Main, or...
Read moreMind you, we haven’t been to Ken and Sue’s since 2019 but since our first time in 2011 it had been our favorite restaurant in SW Colorado and we drove from Cortez for every birthday, anniversary and any time we had company from out of state to eat at Ken and Sue’s. Great food. Great service. Great prices. We missed going last year on our anniversary due to the pandemic so this year we decided to make reservations and enjoy a good anniversary dinner. My husband gets the same thing - tuna on focaccia with oriental slaw. It is the only thing that he enjoys on the menu so I checked the website to make sure it was still there before we went. It was on the dinner menu so I was relieved otherwise we would not have gone. When we got there we did not see it on the menu. The server was apologetic but my husband asked to speak to the manager. She said I it no longer was on the dinner menu. My husband asked if they could make it since it is on the lunch menu. I also said their menu on the website had the tuna sandwich for dinner. She proceeded to say they haven’t had lunch in over a year and no longer made bread nor had the sauces or the oriental slaw. Odd since the seared tuna with black sesame seeds she recommended had the oriental slaw as a side. Also odd that the lunch menu is on the website and posted in the door entry and on the back of the dinner menu. Needless to say my husband was miffed and let her know that he would be writing a review about our experience. She got defensive and said that didn’t matter as they had a loyal and great following - not everyone agrees with her assessment. Anyway after a heated exchange between the two, I decided it was time to leave as she was threatening to ask us to leave. Didn’t eat so don’t know if food is as good as before but we won’t...
