The train ride is worth the money! We chose the least expensive car, but I am sure the more costly options were great too. I recommend checking the weather forecast and reserving your ticket on line, as far in advance as possible. My choices were limited four days in advance of when we wanted to be there. We road in September so the weather was perfect, but cool in the morning. Dress in layers. I had wanted to ride in the open car ( gondola) but it was full. In the end I was happy that we were in a closed car... People in the gondola car stood a lot of the time so that if you wanted to sit your view would have been blocked. I wanted the steam engine train but I was too late to reserve, which was ok. The diesel train was good. Both train options had drawbacks, the diesel fumes were noticable and I heard people say the stream engine soot was a factor. Silverton was great! Plan on lunch in one of the restaurants. Shopping was fun, prices not bad. People there were so friendly and helpful. The town was a bit of a surprise, and delightful. Be ready to take amazing photos! The scenery is beautiful. It doesn't matter where you sit, right or left side. The train follows the river and the best scenery is on the river side, usually. What you miss on the way up you will see on the way back. And the river changes sides along the way. It IS a long day.... We were very tired but happy at the...

We were waiting for the Durango Walking Tour that was supposed to happen at 10:30a, but a guide never showed up, so we decided to walk into this museum and were pleasantly surprised to be taken back into a very cool history of transportation.

The pieces are in great shape and are extremely well cared for!

They have a great mix of hands on and do not touch items for all to enjoy.

Loved seeing the old time train turn-table. Would have loved to see it in action.

Also, I love airplanes and the display at the very back was just amazing!

This museum is well worth the time and the best part it is free! Left a cash donation on the way out, but they have a QR code to donate as well.

Definitely a “must...

We had an amazing day on the DSNGRR. We enjoyed an early train ride up to the old Silverton mining town. The attendant on our train car was so much fun. She shared lots of local history and was so knowledgeable about the railroad and the surrounding areas. We had a great lunch at Handlebars Food and saloon and did some local shopping. We hopped on the bus for the ride back to Durango. The driver was a hoot and also very knowledgeable about the town and its history. When we arrived back at the train depot we took the self guided tour of the railroad museum. It was very interesting and should not be missed. Lots of model trains and even a history movie. We would definitely recommend the DSNGRR for a...

An amazing display of the history of steam engines used since the 1870s on the narrow gage rails in the Durango area and Colorado. This round house is still in full operation maintaining the locomotives for daily use and restoring them. A very complete collection of artifacts dating back to the origins of these routes. You will be hard pressed to find such a cool collection of steam train stuff. I hooked up with a docent named Jack who spent a lot of time explaining the details of the operation of the locomotives and the history of the area. You should ask for him. Please support this museum, you will feel like you have gone back in time.
