In terms of setting, this is an awesome venue between its layout and overall intimacy (I think capacity is around 250). It draws in decent crowds most of the time, the staff is great, and drinks are priced very reasonably. All in all, it is arguably the best spot in Durango to see live music.
Some of the shows run late. I have been to at least 3 performances where the headliner began after midnight and most of the crowd had left by then. One performer ended his set about 30 minutes early on account of it being dead. Based on my experience and comments from other locals, I think that if all shows were scheduled to end at 12:30, more people would show up and stay.
Great music comes through, but it is almost exclusively bluegrass, jam, and folk. Though I don't really indulge in all of these genres, I think that a more hip hop, electronic, rock, and metal would be welcomed by people in Durango.
I also feel as though shows could be better advertised, you need to go to their website and click on specific calendar dates to find out what's playing most of the time. If the event page layout followed a similar template to that of Meow Wolf, Belly Up, or Red Rocks, I think it would be helpful in advertising and filling up shows.

Read moreIf you love live music, Animas City Theater is a perfect venue. It's small enough that you're close to the stage no matter where you are. The balcony offers some limited seating with great views of the stage.
Drinks are reasonably priced and the bar staff are pretty good for a concert venue.
One area the theater could improve is a coat check. They offer a coat rack - tucked in an unobserved and unloved corner that seems more like a place you leave your coat to get stolen than to pick it up later. If you go to the Animas, plan on keeping your coat with you.
The venue is a little grubby but it's a concert venue open seven...
Read moreLove, love, love this theater. It's a great asset to our small town entertainment scene! I love the music events I've been to, because the size makes everything feel more intimate and personal. No matter where you sit, it feels like a front row experience! The staff is great, and there is always a friendly face to greet you at the door! I also have the pleasure of performing here multiple times per week this summer, as the acrobat and aerialist, for the Mysto's Really Big Magic Show. I've performed on alot of stages, and this place will always have a place in my heart! Thanks for bringing so much joy to...
