Rags — Local services in Edgartown

I have never been treated so poorly in a store especially in a place like Martha’s Vineyard, where hospitality is expected. My friends and I walked into Rags with the intention of purchasing a long necklace. From the very beginning, we were being closely watched and judged. One of the staff members made an inappropriate comment about my friend’s body, saying something along the lines of, “It must be so nice to be that skinny to wear a necklace around your waist.” That type of comment is unprofessional, invasive, and completely unacceptable.

While we waited for another friend to return from a nearby store, one of us continued to try the necklace on around her neck and waist. A staff member offered to hold it, and my friend politely declined, stating that her friend was just around the corner. In response, the staff member abruptly and aggressively ripped the necklace out of her hands which was shocking and completely uncalled for.

As we were getting ready to check out, another woman from the store said, “I would really decide if you want to buy that because it’s $50 and there are no returns.” At that point, I decided not to spend my money there. The entire experience felt judgmental, rude, and hostile. We were made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable from the start.

I’m 22 years old, fully capable of making my own decisions, and I walked in ready to make a purchase. Instead, I left feeling disrespected and dismissed. The staff’s treatment of us was condescending and unnecessary. I do not recommend...
