WORST. EXPERIENCE. EVER. I went into the store approximately a month ago and was shown around the showroom by Darrell. Once he found out that I recently purchased a new home and was looking to furnish my home theater room from scratch, he recommended that he come out personally to perform a site survey. I agreed, and he came out a few days later the morning of 3/4. It's important that I mention that I took time out of my work day for this visit. Having had several site surveys performed by home theater companies over the past month or so, Darrell's visit was pretty consistent with the competitors...to a point. That point being that it is clearly evident that Stereo East's agenda is to push SONY SONY SONY. That is obviously where their bread is buttered. That aside, Darrell concluded his visit and agreed to contact me in a "few days" with the proposal. Two days later (3/6), I went into the store because of their Home Technology Expo sale they had been talking up. They had the Sony XBR-55X850A 4K TV on sale for $999, which I thought was a good deal...even for an outdated model. Unfortunately, someone was purchasing the last one just as I walked into the store. So, I asked if they would be willing to sell the floor display. A sales representative went to check and eventually came out and said that they would sell it for $799. However, since it was the floor model, they STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that they deliver it...for "only" $99. I politely declined the delivery as I live only a few minutes away and have plenty of cargo space in my vehicle. The sales rep stated that he didn't know if they would sell it if I didn't let them deliver it. I told them that if they were so insistent upon delivering it, they would have to do so at no charge to me. The sales representative left and then sent Darrell over, who promptly repeated everything the previous representative just said...as if it would have a different meaning coming from him. It didn't. I told him the exact same thing and said they would be losing a sale if they continued trying to force me to purchase an unnecessary delivery service. At this time, Darrell became downright rude and hostile, telling me how his manager wasn't going to do it, so on and so forth. I politely asked for him to discuss it with his manager, and Darrell refused, stating that he has "learned what his manager will and won't do" and that he knows better than to even approach him with that. Fine. I asked to speak to the manager myself, and Darrell very reluctantly went to supposedly get him. Several minutes later, Darrell came back and said that the manager will only sell it to me if I wait three days to pick up the TV (but pay immediately) to allow them time to package it in a way that they're comfortable with. Ready to just be done with the situation, I agreed, paid, and left. Three days later, as agreed, I went into the store to pick up the TV. I saw Darrell there in a conference room working with another customer on a proposal, but mine still wasn't ready. Even one of his colleagues was making comments about the fact that my proposal wasn't done yet. Darrell promised to be in touch "soon." Well, that was approximately three weeks ago and I have STILL not heard from Darrell or anyone over at Stereo East. Every other company has done a site survey and had a proposal to me within 3-5 business days at the most. Stereo East obviously does not want my business, and that's fine because they certainly won't be getting (any more of) it at this point. I am beyond furious that they wasted my time during a work day for absolutely nothing. There are lots of people building houses in my community and approximately 75% of them have home theaters. Well, let's start with Experience. Their Sales department (Anthony, Kevin, etc.) is well-informed and conversant about the latest equipment, products, and multimedia trends. I can't begin to express how frustrating it is to walk into a store and ask the sales associate a simple product specification or comparison question only to have that rep regurgitate information back to me from a google search. Really?
First off, I'm a technology enthusiast, and before I go into a store, I have already researched a fair amount. I generally have an idea of what I'm looking for, and when I ask a question, I don't expect a sales rep to repeat information I already know. I'm seeking personal experience or shared customer experiences, which is EXACTLY what you get with Stereo East. Their sales staff has product domain knowledge and real-world experience that never fails to disappoint!
So now that you've made your major purchase, you begin to get the jitters about the installation and whether that will be as positive as the sales experience? Rest assured their installation crews are just as experienced in the latest technology trends, standards, and implementation methods to suit any scenario. I, in particular, have LOVED working with Ray or David, who never hesitate to share their personal experience or knowledge when performing projects. Furthermore, their installation crews are courteous, professional, and reliable, and what's not to love about that?
Next, let's discuss Service. When you make a significant purchase, you want to ensure that the company will back the products and services they sell. Stereo East doesn't disappoint, and the fact that I keep coming back year after year is a testament to the quality of service that I've received over the years. No matter what product or service I have purchased, Stereo East has been exceptional in delivering a quality product and service. Now, I won’t pretend that mistakes haven’t been made along the way, but what sets Stereo East apart from other competitors is its customer focus and attention to detail. If there’s an oversight or miscalculation, they own it and do everything possible to make it right. I don’t expect perfection, but it’s respectable to see a Retailer/Service Provider work so hard to ensure its customers are taken care of.
Finally, let’s discuss Cost-Effectiveness. I appreciate Stereo East because it offers products across the cost spectrum from budget to mid-tier to high-end discerning tastes. They don’t price themselves into a single category but offer value to those who seek it. I have truly enjoyed working with Danny, Gary, and Anthony over the years as they have offered a variety of products and solutions to suit my budget. Unfortunately, I’m a glutton for punishment, and I tend to delve into the high-end product categories more than I’d like to, but it doesn’t mean that’s where Stereo East takes me. My experience tends to be personalized, and the cost aspect is always fair and balanced.
