It's not often that I leave a Google review, but my experience at Avocado Green Mattress was so extraordinary that I want to share it. I ordered a mattress online from Avocado. I made the best choice I could, but the minute it arrived I knew it was way too firm for me. I followed all the recommendations and did my best to get used to it, but after almost 30 days it was still not comfortable to me.
Because you only get 1 exchange (fair enough), my husband and I decided to make the trip out to Hoboken to test the mattresses in person. We were greeted by a warm and professional team of young men. When we explained that we were not satisfied with the mattress we purchased and how terrible we felt about having to return it, they immediately told us not to feel bad because the mattress was going to be donated to someone in need.
One of the salespeople, Carr, jumped in to help us out. He provided pillowcases to rest our heads on for cleanliness and encouraged us to lie on a variety of mattresses, which we did. He was a wealth of information and was quickly and succinctly able to explain the various options. We picked the new luxury plush mattress with a pillow top out. A selection that was substantially more expensive than our original. BUT there was a barely used floor model that was for sale at a huge discount. Carr explained why it was on sale in detail and how it had been used. They even through in an organic mattress cover on top of the discount!
As we started to work out the details, Carr was several steps ahead. He offered us an additional discount if we could arrange for pickup. It seemed easy enough, so we agreed. Then, we needed a way to get the return mattress back. Unlike the mattress we replaced, the latex mattress would not stand on its side and so we couldn't easily wait for a pick up - but honestly we were clueless about this issue.
Without even telling us about the problem we were going to face, Carr solved it. He was in touch with the CA office, where he worked with an employee named Joy to coordinate someone to come THE NEXT DAY to pick up the mattress, deliver it to the recipient AND to pick up our new mattress in Hoboken and bring it to Brooklyn. All of this was free of charge.
All of this would be enough for an incredible customer experience, but, there's more. The whole pick up and delivery was handled in the most friendly way imaginable. Raul and Martin text messaged in advance. Worked with my husband to get the very heavy bed down a narrow, floating staircase with fencing around it to protect our puppy from falling off. These guys were so cool and chill! Not at all your typical delivery folks.
Now my Oura Ring (if you don't know what it is, check it out!) doesn't give me a big red alert for restless sleep (yay!) and Avocado has lifetime customers! The new mattress is beyond imaginable in terms of soft comfort and also support. It's truly a 5 star sleep experience. In addition we decided to purchase the platform that raises the head and feet. We had no idea that we had a need for this until visiting the store and trying it out!
I should mention that ALL of the employees we encountered were Black, brown and/or non-binary. As Black people in the wellness industry, we are quite accustomed to visiting stores with all white staff. This company really has invested in non-white employees, who are exceptional in every way. It's also obvious that they like their jobs and feel connected with the mission and valued. We are really happy to spend money supporting such an incredible company that represents our values in every way. It's not every day that what could have been a horrible experience is transformed into the best imaginable. Kudos to Avocado...

My wife wanted to shop avocado after research about organic/non toxic/sustainable etc etc. we pulled the trigger on the city bed frame w headboard and a mattress. The city bed frame took longer than the 6 weeks they predicted. The headboard never came. Fed ex sent it back to them due to either damage in transit or an issue with the shipping label. I got different stories from fed Ex and will never know what happened. Since it was being shipped back to avocado I figured they could template it and send another. Nope. They say they need to make another city bed frame to marry to the new headboard. Inside of 3 days they have a crew at the house to remove the bed frame (w no coordination or notice). We sent them away. I refused to sleep on the mattress on the floor again while avocado took god knows how long to fabricate another bed and headboard. Finally maybe a month or so later.. (so maybe 10-12 weeks from the original order), we received the new bed frame and headboard. I dismantle the old one and put it on my porch and assembled the new one. I get to the headboard .. and no hardware. Now without going into too much detail, avocado has these young millennial or maybe even Z Californian customer service reps and they are quick to respond but slow to act. They don’t seem to really have any ability to have things shipped or resolve issues. They seem to just be able to communicate in vague ways aimed at suggesting to you how helpful and on your team they are. Anyway another two weeks and I finally got my hardware. The headboard is two pieces and where they fit together.. right at the top.. in the most visible place is a unsightly glaring chip. It is underneath the finish so obviously it didn’t happen in transit. It’s how they made it in the workshop and I guess they thought it was good enough. I don’t have the will to continue on talking to avocado customer service. It’s too exhausting. Additionally, the company that came by my house to take the bed when the headboard didn’t arrive, it was like pulling teeth to get them to return when we were actually ready for them. The dismantled frame sat on our front porch for a couple weeks.
The whole experience was disappointing. This is a sham company. They are wasteful. The quality of the product is sub par. They are definitely more organized in their sales department. Getting your money is an easy seamless process. It’s everything else that they have a difficult time w. I would ask to talk to a supervisor etc to no avail. Read moreI chose to write my review on google rather than through the vendor Avocado Green uses to solicit reviews because it seems they only submit the 5 star, completely glowing reviews to the website. I ordered a king size mattress and the separate pillow top and chose to get 2 king sized pillows for free instead of $150 off (that was the promotion at the time of ordering). Let me start out by saying the customer service was fantastic. Each person I interacted with through chat was very responsive. One of the reasons I went with this company was that the product was delivered FEDEX and I could select an option to just leave it on the porch. Because I live in a safe neighborhood and we have security cameras, I was good with this option. Meant I did not have to schedule time off from work. Well, I guess Fedex decided to stop shipping these mattresses because they're too heavy, so they had to go with a freight company. I tried and thought we had managed to get them to leave the product. It just so happens, I was coming home when they were leaving, and they had not left the mattress since I wasn't home. Because I came home, they delivered. So, beware, you do have to be home to have this mattress delivered. I asked them to change this option on the website, but I'm not sure they did . The mattress is very, very heavy. But we managed to get it on the bed. The first night we slept on it without the pillow top to see if we liked it. We only lasted 2 nights without the pillow top. It is very, very firm and we were used to sleeping on a squishy water mattress for many years. Once we put the pillow top on, it was better. But I was still not comfortable. I'm a side sleeper and I was just not sleeping well. My husband and I were both sweaty all the time. Even though the description says it's cool, it didn't seem like it. We were always hot. My husband reverted to his previous pillow and started sleeping better. I ended up doing the same and eventually after about 6 weeks, I am finally comfortable sleeping on this mattress. I have severe osteoarthritis in my knees and the one thing I noticed with this mattress is my knees no longer hurt at night when I'm sleeping. We're about at the 3 month mark now. We are going to keep the mattress. The pillows have been discarded. I should have went with the $150 off, but no big deal. We still sleep very warm, but it's not unbearable. I suggest you give this mattress a good 2 to 3 months before making a decision. It is a pricey investment, but I do think it's worth is. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5, because I do not believe the claims that it cools you off, or sleeps cool. It is a pretty warm mattress. We only use...
