It might not be the newest building in Houston, but I discovered what I'd been missing all these years thinking that it was more expensive to ride the train than the bus. For a round trip ticket to Houston, Amtrak charges $44 bought a week in advance. For the same trip, Greyhound charges almost double that. Of course, Greyhound has WiFi on all their buses, not Amtrak. There are 6 times of departure to choose from on the bus. Amtrak leaves once a day. Greyhound keeps to a stricter schedule than Amtrak. A trip to Houston might take 4 hours or it might take 8. The reason is Southern Pacific owns the tracks and their trains get priority. If Amtrak and SP are coming together, Amtrak gets to wait til SP passes. But you can't get a sleeper suite on the bus. Read moreThis station is definitely smaller than what I’m used to—Chicago Union Station feels huge in comparison. I came to pick up a friend who transferred in on Amtrak bus service. They said the ride was decent overall, a couple of intoxicated sketchy characters on board (but honestly, you can find that anywhere). Finding the place was pretty simple, which was nice. At first, I thought it was the incorrect pick up location. Very empty lot no one was standing around. Closer to arrival time more individuals were arriving to pick up folks.
