Our group of four rated this tour with James excellent, the best of all we took during our week in Miami. Starting in the lobby of an Art Deco hotel, our guide James reviewed the history of South Beach and its development from a run-down beach town to the center of nightlife, noting the contributions of Miami Vice and a determined preservationist who obtained historic designation for the district, and then he began instructing us in elements of art deco so that by the end of the slightly more than two hours tour, we--architectural novices at the start--were able to recognize the key elements of Art Deco and distinguish Art Deco from faux deco, Miami Deco, and Streamline Moderne. His entertaining instruction served us well as we later started off on our own, now alert to symmetry, threes, ziggurat decoration, and characteristic colors of Art Deco style. With James, we visited the lobbies and sometimes the roof decks of at least five hotels, and learned of trademark objections by New York hotels that caused some to change their names, but not their signage. We viewed exhibits at the Wolfsonian and learned of Wolfson's role in South Beach. We stopped at Lummus Park and were treated to comments on Casa Casaurina, former mansion of Gianni Versace, and the story of his murder and how this changed celebrities' view of Miami as a place where they could relax in peace. We learned how to read the patern in hotel lobby floors to find once secret casino rooms. Our guide's extraordinary knowledge of architectural history and sociological insights made this a truly extraordinary wallking tour, which we...
Read moreIf you're even remotely interested in architecture or history, James Cubby’s Art Deco Tour in Miami Beach is an absolute must. James is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also passionate about the Art Deco movement and its rich presence in Miami Beach.
During the tour, we visited a number of iconic hotels and buildings, each with its own story and unique design elements. James brought these structures to life by explaining the historical context in which they were built, pointing out intricate details in the facades, interiors, and decorative motifs that I would have easily overlooked on my own.
His storytelling was engaging and informative, blending historical facts with local anecdotes that gave depth to the experience. From the pastel colors and geometric patterns to the nautical influences and neon lights, every aspect of the Art Deco style was explored in a way that was accessible and fascinating.
Whether you're a first-time visitor or a local wanting to learn more about your city, this tour offers a fresh and enriching perspective on Miami Beach. Highly...
