I am not new to Soma. At all. My mother was a manager until she retired a few years back. The standards Soma had were impeccable. The employees were kind, always greeted you, asked if you needed help. They always offered to fit you and find the best fit. Now? It's a mess. There are racks that sit in the middle of walkways as if staging hadn't been completed. There are dirty boxes lining the floor to the side of the check-out counter.
When I walked in today at about 3:45, I was not greeted by anyone. I took a peek around the store to see if I could find someone to help me. There was one employee at the counter speaking to another customer. There were no products on the counter, it seemed like they were just chatting. Not only were they chatting, they were gossiping about how bad Soma corporate was and how poor their customer service was. A Soma employee speaking poorly about the company in front of customers? After a few minutes of being ignored and listening to the gossip I walked up to get the employee's attention and asked if there was anyone else on the floor to help me. She said "No, but I can." And I said "Oh, thank you. I'd like to be fitted." She then asked me to take off my jacket. I said "Here? In the middle of the store?" I was standing at the counter with my husband and two other customers. That made me uncomfortable. She said "Yes, we are pretty casual." Really? I thought Soma was about class, respect for the customer, service. I said "I'd prefer to be fitted in the fitting room." We walked back there and she fitted me. I mentioned that my mother had been a previous manager and it seemed as though a lot had changed. She said "It has."
She gave me a few bras and checked on me once. I said that I was still trying to decide. Well, apparently while I was in the changing room, she was openly complaining about me to the other customers and a new employee that had emerged from the back office. To her utter surprise, not putting two and two together, she was complaining and speaking poorly about me and my preference to have my breasts fitted away from the eyes of the entire store...in front of my husband. He stared her down until she realized he was with me, to which she abruptly stopped speaking about me.
Clearly she felt uncomfortable working with me after the fact because she sent the other employee to come check on me. I promptly handed her the bras and walked out the store.
I was so insulted and hurt by the way she engaged me that I went back to my car and cried. Soma carries sizes for all women no matter their shape, that is why I went there. I traveled from out of county just to go to the one place I knew I was welcome and would be treated with respect and kindness. I called the customer service line after leaving but there was a wait.
I know Soma managers check the reviews and I hope my situation will be taken seriously. I cannot and will not take my business back to this Soma. Soma in the Destin Commons is so poorly run and managed it is mind blowing. If I wanted a casual experience where the employees treat me as a number, I'd go to Target and pull a bra off the rack.
Disappointed and hurt.
EDIT: Today is 2/21, the morning after. I just got off a call with Soma customer service. I was treated so kindly by the customer service representative. She expressed her disappointment and her empathy for my situation. I felt so respected and validated for my experience. It was not necessary, but they offered to send me the bra that I had been interested in purchasing. I paid a small fee compared to what it would have originally cost. I was so grateful to the customer service and the management that took my experience seriously. I cannot express my gratefulness. The Soma brand has always cared for women like me who struggle to find bras made by women for women. I am thankful for...
Read moreI went to Soma with a close friend, as neither of us had been fitted in a while and were concerned we each needed a different size. I knew Soma products to be of quality and to have wider bands and larger cups than what is available in many stores. (They even have push-ups and plunges in cup sizes larger than a C!!) AJ helped both of us together and was such a delight!! She was attentive to our needs (not trying to sell us bras we didn't like/need), and, when she needed to assist another customer, she came right back like she said she would. As a woman with a significant size difference between one and the other, I had a completely different experience here with AJ than anywhere else. She was understanding, caring, and funny. And, as we headed out, she let us know about the big online sale going on! 12/10, would buy bras from...

Telling a military family that you don't give military discounts because you don't want to look like you're showing favoritism = 0 stars
Just respond like other stores, "No, we don't, but thank you for your service." Otherwise, you might want to reconsider changing 'favoritism' to 'patriotism' because you definitely didn't look like you had any of that.
Super grateful for the many other stores in the commons that give military discounts! (Bass Pro Shop, Books A Millions, Hollister, and Victoria's Secret, Lowes, and many more.) Also grateful for the many that remain patriotic/kind with their responses if their organization does not...
