We have stayed at a Sonder apartment in Nashville many times over the past few years while visiting our daughter at a nearby university. We really love the concept and the location but have had to come to grips with what this is and what it isn't. First, it's not a hotel. No one from the Sonder team is onsite to assist and it's all done through an app. When you have an issue, there's typically no immediate fix so you have to be patient. For example, during our stay this past week, the elevator broke over the weekend. We had to go up 7 flights of stairs to our room (the apartments are on 4th floor and parking is 3 levels down from the first floor in the parking garage). I called and they were very nice but since it was the weekend they couldn't have someone look at it until the next morning (which they did and got it up and running quickly). These are modestly constructed apartments with low cost, yet modern furnishings and fixtures being rented out like hotel rooms. The location is awesome. Walk to restaurants, bars, stores in Hillsboro Village as well as the two adjacent universities. Parking is easy and convenient. Apartments are spacious, clean and cover all of the basics (stove, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, nice showers, etc). We have learned to appreciate the convenience and cleanliness of these places but have learned to put up with uncomfortable and noisy beds, squeaky doors, noise from units above and below, noise from the three hospitals next door (sirens and helicopters) etc. When we have had issues, the team at Sonder jumps on the phone and follows up. Excellent customer service and the price is usually very good compared to other hotels...
Read moreReally disappointed in this stay. I booked one night in a 1br/1ba unit using Bonvoy points. I received a notification shortly before check-in that I was “downgraded” to a studio “due to unforeseen availability issues”. I inquired about a partial refund, but it took two follow-ups to only be offered 1,000 points. Further, after checking in, I was sneezing quite a bit. The air handler is located in the room so I checked the filter - it was covered in mold. No one was available to replace it since it was after business hours. A storage room down the hall was left ajar, where I found filters and replaced it myself. The bedding was clean and the bed comfortable, though the room is already showing its age with dirty carpet in the bedroom and a couch with little padding. There was also brown residue of some sort on the bathroom door from the previous guest. The location is great - just across from the Belcourt! - but I will stay at the Moxy across the street or a nearby full service property in the future. This was my first, and likely last,...
Read moreIf you’re looking for a sub-par Airbnb experience, this is your spot. Three stars for location and that’s being generous (how we got a loud spot in Hillsboro Village is beyond me).
Where to begin… there were stains all over the carpet when we arrived (someone DID come and spot clean, but left the floor wet and soapy). The washer and dryer destroyed our newly purchased clothes. The lights and fan didn’t work on the stove. The bed was horribly uncomfortable and topped with the cheapest, hospital-style bedding I have ever seen. The lock on the front door was finicky to say the least. There was a fire alarm going off in the elevator lobby for HOURS! There was no furniture in the outdoor spaces. Someone decided to pressure-wash the roof and side of the building at 2am our first night and the thinly insulated stairwell kept us up the rest of the trip.
Mostly, I just don’t understand how you don’t get a bed right in an Airbnb. That’s pretty much THE most...
