432 Park Avenue in Manhattan, standing at 425.5 meters, is one of the tallest residential buildings in the world. Designed by Rafael Viñoly, its structure features white concrete with uniformly square windows. It was built on the site of the historic Drake Hotel, demolished in 2006. Its height-to-width ratio of 15:1 makes it among the world’s slenderest skyscrapers. To manage wind forces, five double-height mechanical floors were placed at intervals and are lit at night. Two tuned mass dampers installed at the top reduce wind-induced vibrations.
The building contains 147 residential units ranging from compact studios to multimillion-dollar penthouses. Upper-floor units have ceilings 4.72 meters high and windows offering 360-degree views of Manhattan. The 12th floor hosts a private restaurant led by a Michelin-star chef. Amenities include an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, billiards room, library, cinema, massage room, sauna, steam room, and children’s play area.
In recent years, residents have reported issues such as wind noise, water leaks, and elevator malfunctions. Many units were purchased through legal entities to conceal buyers’ identities. The tower symbolizes luxury living and economic disparity in...
Read more432 Park Avenue symbolizes capitalism at its worst: the superfluities of lifestyles materialistic and frankly unethical, considering the millions fighting and sweating for their livings beneath, upon whom residents will leer arrogantly, and the pitiful hideousness of the exterior, which seems like a self-absorbed white man's middle finger to the underprivileged of New York and the rest of the world. How disgusting to believe this construction to be purposive, when it signifies only an insufferable void within the hearts and souls of its proprietors, to think that More and More is necessary to fulfill them, and that those who scurry beneath are less than themselves when every quality and advantage they think themselves to possess signifies nothing in the worth of every soul and consciousness. See how they attempt to run away from life and nature by living upon masses of concrete, glass and stone, but they will never reach so high as to love and be contented, and they will climb forever into the sky until death, as I and my peers live to love each other, ourselves,...
Read moreMy step-daughter's younger sister purchased a unit near the top of 432 ... the view from there is like being in a chopper without the noise. She has the entire floor (7500 sq feet) and the ceilings are 15 feet high. Others are scoffing at this but it seems like sour grapes. Sure it's minimalism writ large but there is a quiet elegance about the tower. The elevators empty out into the middle of the floor and you can walk in either direction. They had no trouble moving all her art and the Steinway piano too. She says the views - which wrap around the entire building are very inspirational. She also says the building does not sway compared to others of its great height, due to the breezeways every 12 floors that minimize the resistance. Someone mentioned asbestos - but clearly, using that material in construction has been illegal for decades. It's a safe place to live but unfortunately there will be no observation deck so the public will not get to see these...
