J Hair Salon — Local services in New York

I wouldn’t recommend this place for men or anyone that has short hair. I asked for simple buzz. A 1 on the top and a 0 on the sides with a fade. I thought I was clear, but the experience turned out to be very frustrating. The barber spent an excessive amount of time scissor cutting and barely used the electric razor, making the process much longer than necessary. When more customers came in, he tried to act like he was finished with my cut, but he hadn’t even completed the job. I still had a significant amount of hair on top, so I had to stop him and say, “Hey, this isn’t a 1, and the sides are nowhere near a 0.” He suddenly became rough and hurried, saying “ok, ok, ok.”

In the end, the haircut wasn’t what I asked for and looked half-done, even worse than something from Supercuts. To top it off, he didn’t even do the fade. For a place that markets itself as a salon, it’s ironic that even a chain like Supercuts did a better job. The only reason I didn’t give this place one star is because, as other reviews mention, they do offer a nice shampooing at the start—if you’re into that. But if not, it’s just an unnecessary bonus. I came here a couple of days ago while I was strolling through Chinatown. I decided to get a haircut out of the blue. I usually get my haircut at another place with my hair stylist which I know by name. And that's probably the only thing I now about him. My Chinese is not that good, so I'd only be answering him back in yes or no. So, trying some place new was not a big deal.

I'd definitely come back here as my back up spot for a decent unrushed yet not too long of a haircut. I appreciate this place more than the other hair salons in the area because the people are normal. They are not too hipster but they still wore the too damn skinny jeans. Excellent customer service. They THOROUGHLY washed/massaged my hair every time I went. Like I’m talking full on scalp massage that puts you straight to sleep. Asked for layers and since I naturally have 2A/B curly hair I was worried they would cut it too short but he gave me exactly what I wanted and kept checking in with me every few minutes or so while cutting my hair to see how I would feel regarding the length and look so far. They have great knowledge of curly hair in this salon as I was surprised he pulled out a diffuser for my curls. Definitely...
