If you’re a serious practitioner of Pilates— real Pilates— then you would do well by your dedication to visit Alexia’s beautiful, private studio! I don’t usually employ cliches, simply because I expect results from my people and business intercourse; here, though, I enthusiastically break my own rule because it begs to be said of her Pilates Perfect: THIS GEM OF A PILATES STUDIO IS ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS ON THE UES.”
Perhaps because it’s just off Madison it doesn’t get the eyeballs, yet the instruction and results of this top-notch master rivals any of the other “name” establishments around here. Nota bene.: Gush I do with compelling reason: this lady KNOWS PILATES like I’ve never experienced in the past 2 decades. And I feel so comfortable and oddly “bad-ass” doing Pilates in her studio.
It’s not big— and is a little hard to find the first time, the entrance being on the side of a townhouse parked between embassies— but once in the door it surprises with a huge, really nice and peaceful waiting area that you’d never expect. The studio itself is modern, elegant, peaceful, accommodating, warm, quiet, aesthetically pleasing, well-designed and beautifully lit (and, actually, she changes the lighting to suit each person individually— an amenity I’ve never experienced in my life of demanding expectations— and she has the temperature always just perfect for each person. It’s pretty impressive attention to individual detail for ANY business). She even offers water, nutrition bars, or some hard candy— helpful when I had no water or my low blood sugar made me feel a little weak, once. Alexia clearly understands her business & customer service besides the Pilates. I find the whole gestalt here wonderful and my mood picks up every time my feet head out the door to go there.
Generally, I am not of the sort of person who is moved to proffer reviews (mostly because I’m compulsively thorough or, as my husband says, too fastidious for this century!) BUT, quite frankly, I have had two month’s worth of the most eye-opening, knowledgeable, professional (but really warm), immediacy of RESULTS, uncannily individualized, exhilaratingly body-exhausting workouts. Given my long consistent history with the incomparable Pilates methods of exercise & strength building, I marveled that after my first two sessions with Alexia— I experienced that “muscle shake” and “targeted ache” of muscles which I had THOUGHT were being worked out for years! It was weirdly humbling to have a revelation like this after decades of thinking I knew everything out there. Perhaps the greatest testimony to what her expertise can do? Her stress of “balancing the body with core strength”, and ability to craft exercises for JUST ME, has helped me to walk discomfort-free on a knee that has afflicted me since a skiing fall in the 90’s. No— I’m not saying it’s magic, I did the work in session— but Alexia KNEW my body by observation of my exercise patterns.
I was initially referred by a friend of mine who lives on E68th and, after also walking by it quite a few times, needed to have an option closer to home, what with her insanely busy schedule; she also was immediately floored at just how knowledgeable the owner Alexia was about the Pilates universe— and how adept she is at perceiving the needs & demands of one's body with a remarkable intuition. Also, it is a completely private, one-on-one studio, so there’s no “social exercise” nonsense intruding. It is seriously 101% Pilates centered ENTIRELY ON ME, administered by an owner who is SERIOUSLY INSANELY radiating Pilates wisdom. She is one of those seemingly unassuming people who, when that studio door closes, teaches Pilates in a way that I feel like I’ve BECOME Pilates. I know it sounds weird but I’m not certain how else to phrase it.
I know it’s a long review. I also know that anybody wise enough to listen to me will feel exactly his way about it too. It’s a special little place. Take it for what’s it worth to you— try this Pilates Studio Perfect and see if you don’t feel a bit like...
Read moreI have taken a lot of different exercise classes over the years and many have claimed to be Pilates, but Alexia Simmons at Pilates Perfect is an authentic Joseph Pilates instructor. She holds firmly to Joseph Pilates’ original method. I have been going for several months and have gotten great results. Not only do I feel stronger but I have more energy. I notice it when I’m carrying groceries or working in the yard. My teenage daughter noticed my flat abs and now she’s going to Alexia, too! Alexia is a hands on, committed and encouraging instructor, and she challenges me which always boosts my confidence in my abilities. She has a great sense of humor and is fun to be around. The hour is over before I know it! The studio is clean and inviting. Overall, Alexia’s experience and expertise is impressive and has had a very positive impact on my overall health and energy. I also like the way I look - my muscles are toned, my clothes fit better and my posture has improved. I highly recommend Alexia Simmons at...
Read moreI began taking pilates in 2001 while living in Southern Florida as I read that it was great for rehabilitating body injuries and to help with back issues. I started with private sessions, which I really liked but as it began to become more popular & expensive, I switched to taking classes. For me I did not feel like I was getting the same benefits with classes as I did in private sessions so I stopped going. After moving to NYC I tried many places and recently found Pilates Perfect. I am so happy to have found this studio! The private classes are affordable & provide the true teachings of Joseph Pilates. Alexia's style of teaching is unlike anything I have found; she ask's about my concerns and then focuses on what will be best for my body. With each session I continue to feel challenged and know that I am getting a great physical and mental workout. It is exciting to see results but most importantly my body...
