I went for a walk this morning up and down the cobblestone streets of Battery Park City and Tribeca. 10 years ago I wanted to bring cobblestones to the streets of our eclectic shopping district ... like Church Street has up in Burlington and Benefit Street down in Providence ... but that idea fell on deaf ears.
30 minutes into the walk, hungry and thirsty, I stopped at Varick Market Place near the Holland Tunnel. I planned to get a small bottle of water, 5-hour Energy, and a green apple. They were out of green apples so I got a package of blueberries and strawberries and cup of yogurt. Found a much healthier energy shot too.
On the way to pay I saw a basket of mangoes and asked the guy behind the counter if he'd slice one up, Of course! and the slices filled the entire container. He gave me the nut too.
"Best part!" he said with a smile.
"Yeah," I said, "especially when you freeze it, stick it with a fork, and you have a mango popsicle."
I asked Hussein if he was irked by my request to slice the mango.
"Not at all. I am happy to help you and make everything easier for you and satisfy you."
I sat at a small wood counter by the window, guzzled the yogurt, then shoved one fresh mango slice after another into my pie hole and they were gone in a few minutes. Then it was time for the blueberries and strawberries. Perfect mid-walk boost.
I brought the mango nut back and plan to gnaw on it after dinner.

Read moreThis place has never let me down. Great food. Awesome staff. I was even in need of some ping pong balls… My wife, friend, and I were playing ping-pong in the park nearby and the ball that the park provided was broken. My wife suggested that we go to Varick’s to see if they have any ping-pong balls. I was thinking, nahhh they probably don’t have them because… why would they?! But sure enough- they had them! I was shocked. They saved our night. Thanks Varick’s...
Read moreWe love this new , very clean marketplace. We went in there for breakfast and it was inexpensive and delicious. We had egg platters , which included coffee or tea, toast or for $.50 extra a bagel, which we chose. The bagels were toasted and were perfect. The hashbrowns were great. They also have good looking salads and a lot of food to choose from for lunch or dinner . Will return in the near future for their wonderful looking...
