I have been going to Y7 since 2018. Through weight loss, weight gain, moving, Covid, and many other changes in my life Y7 has been a yoga studio that I keep coming back to.
There is certainly a school of thought that hot yoga or Vinyasa flow yoga is "not yoga" (my mom being one of those people lol) But I believe that this style of yoga is just as valid as any other.
I have been guided by dozens of teachers, and yes, some I liked more than others, but because this style is formulaic, there's a foundation for students to fall back on. I love that the class is dimly lit. It allows for one to concentrate on how you feel rather than how you look and focus on yourself rather than other people.
The studio in Williamsburg has been here along time and it's apparent to me that there are some structural integrity issues with the building itself, which I cannot and will not ever blame Y7 for. Based on the work that they've done, I believe that they try their absolute best to maintain the studio. There are some things that are unavoidable in New York City one of which is a building developer doing shoddy work in a nice neighborhood just to turn over a building.
If you are coming from class pass, or you are new to yoga in general or new to this style of yoga, may I just offer this piece of advice since you're reading my review: know that this style and format is somewhat advanced and you may feel uncomfortable, the first couple of times, but eventually your body Becomes conditioned. Allow yourself at least a few sessions before you write this style of yoga off completely. If you do not like hot yoga, or Vinyasa yoga, I would say you should find a more traditional style...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreNot to go scorched earth about something kinda minor, but man, I just had a real eye-roll of an experience here. I showed up 5 min late after getting mixed up and thinking the studio was on NORTH 1st, not SOUTH 1st. I was summarily turned away at the door because they have a "very strict" late policy.
They then said they'd mark me as present so the app I booked the class on wouldn't charge me another extra fee for an unscheduled absence, and told me to lie on the app and say I'd attended, but is that realllllly a favor? Either way, they keep the money and I have to literally ride home in the rain without a class I paid for.
It's New York city. People are regularly 5 min late, and if you're gonna have strict policies about it, please list that up front in your booking app (I double checked and it's nowhere to be found). Kinda makes you wonder how many people they run this minor graft with
In conclusion, serves me right for trying to do bougie white lady hip hop yoga in Williamsburg lmaoooo
EDIT: looks like a solid third of these reviews say the exact same thing so maybe that's a sign to cool it on the late policy my dudes š I anxiously await your copy-paste...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've loved being a Y7 member for the past ~6 months. The instructors are really welcoming and you can tell, incredibly well-trained. Not just physically, but spiritually with respect to the practice. While the class can be categorized as fast pace, Y7 instructors truly care about alignment and safety, which isn't always the case in workouts of this kind. I appreciate that they recommend rest when needed, and never shame you for doing so, and they mention that off the bat, to make the space inclusive for those new to the practice.
The ONLY reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5 isn't due to customer satisfaction with the studio, but due to their pricing model. As a member, I pay $170+ a monthly, normal for a monthly membership in NYC. That said, if I don't cancel my booking for a class 12 hours prior to said class, I get charged $10 incrementally. I understand this billing model for non-members, but as a member, aren't I already paying for the class, regardless if I go or not?
12 hours in advance is insane.. maybe lessen that for members to 3 hours if you can't wipe out the late-cancel...
