Iâm writing this review after my 3rd visit today using their student nail services.
My first two visits (acrylic removal and new acrylic set, then acrylic removal and gel manicure) were positive. The students were gentle and patient, took their time, and I was comfortable with their pace. Each session lasted around 3 hours, which I expected.
I understand you sign a waiver and pay a cheaper fee because itâs a learning environment. That said, I need to share a flawed experience I had today.
â ď¸ WARNING FOR ACRYLIC/ENHANCEMENT REMOVAL: Make sure to ask the student to be gentle and check in with you.
I came in with acrylic nails and charms (except my thumbs), glued on strong with UV resin by a home-based tech. The student led me in, had me wash my hands, then pulled out large nail pliers (later called âtoo bigâ by an instructor). Without soaking, she grabbed a charm on my pinky and started peeling off the acrylicâdry. I was shocked. She looked at me and said, âOh, youâre scared.â
She pulled it halfwayâI felt a sharp pain and tear. Then she said, âomg/look, itâs so easy.â I gasped in pain and said it hurt. She replied, âMaybe itâs still stuck.â (It had only been 2.5 weeks since application, no lifting.) She moved on and tried picking off the other charms the same way, but they did not budge. Though it didnât hurt as badly, it was still rough.
Eventually, she went to the back. Her instructor told her to soak my nails in acetone (as was done in my past visits).
When she came back, my pinky was bleeding. I told her. She began soaking my nails, which surprisingly didnât stingâI think the pinky was numb. As she scraped the melting acrylic, it bled more. The charms wouldnât budge. The instructor stepped in.
Immediately, I could tell the instructor was more experienced and patient. She commented the pliers were inappropriate, told the student to soak longer, and use an electric buffer for nails without charms. She gently lifted acrylic with a nail tip insteadâway less painful. She checked in with me on each nail and explained where it might hurt. I asked her to handle my pinkyâI didnât trust the student anymore.
She removed the charms, noting the resin made soaking ineffective. For the pinky, she held it down to reduce pressureâit still hurt, but was manageable. The student cringed while watching. The instructor said she was scared to hurt me but had to do it. I agreedâI just needed it off.
They called me âtough.â Honestly, I donât think they realized how bad it hurt. Iâd rate the pain an 8.5/10. (For reference: I have 20+ tattoos, most of which Iâd rate 4/10.) At a few points, I felt like Iâd pass out.
She later mentioned sheâd recently removed her own acrylics and that her friends bite theirs off and she was glad I came in.
I left with the rest of my nails smooth and buffed, and my pinky bandaged with a thin acrylic layer left to protect it. The process took about an hour and 15 minutes.
The student apologized for my pinky. I appreciated that. But the instructor saved the day. She was professional, skilled, and someone I completely trusted. Without her, the experience couldâve been traumatic. Sheâs definitely an asset to the program.
All this is to sayâbeware. This isnât a chop shop, but youâre paying $12 for something that could be great or go very wrong. This reminded me: itâs a school.
I donât blame the student entirelyâI donât know how theyâre trained. But everyone deserves to feel safe and cared for during a service. I hope management emphasizes this when preparing students.
Iâm okay now. Honestly, Iâm glad this happened to meâI can take it. But for someone else, it couldâve been much worse/traumatizing. I usually get my nails done twice a year, and this will probably be it for 2025, so now I can just let it heal and regrow. If imperfect nails, some pain, and a few extra hours of your time are an issue for you, I recommend seeking services elsewhere. Itâs a...
Read moreI am proud to share that I have recently graduated from Bellus Academyâs Advanced Cosmetology program, a comprehensive 10 months course that truly transformed my skills, confidence, and perspective on the beauty industry. When I began this journey I had little to no experience in hair cutting, coloring or extensions. Through Bellusâs hands on learning environment I was able develop a strong foundation in every aspect of cosmetology. The programâs structure allowed me to practice and refine each skill in a real world setting, turning my initial curiosity into a true professional passion. A big shout out to the dedicated educators who guided me throughout this journey, especially the head lead educators ( Mrs Todd Dasilva, Miss Bree Emerick, Miss Chey Monaghan, Miss Miranda ) who bring a wealth of salon experience, technical knowledge, and genuinely caring for students and each of them goes above and beyond to support students all Learning levels, encouraging us to grow, challenge ourselves, pursue in our craft. Their mentorship has made a lasting impact on my professional development. I would like to recognize Bellus Academyâs continuous innovation, particularly with recent updates to the 2025 curriculum, this happened since the vice president of all Bellus Academyâs location and the new director at Poway location Mrs David Yocum which further enhance the students learning experience. The academyâs dedication to staying aligned with modern industry standards ensures that graduates are not only skilled but also prepared to thrive in todayâs evolving beauty industry. A Major highlights of my time at Bellus Academy was the opportunity to participate in real world events such as fashion shows, beauty pageants, and San Diego Fashion Week, among many others. Under the guidance of Mrs. Floyd, our incredible event coordinator, and event educators I gained valuable experience working behind the scenes with professional runway models. These experiences taught me how to create stunning hair and makeup looks. Mrs. Floydâs organization, enthusiasm, and ensures we are well-prepared, punctual made every event a rewarding learning opportunity. Completing this program has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. And hopefully find the dream salon I want to...
Read moreI am writing this review as a recent graduate of the esti 103 program. I started in October, 2024 and my last day was July 2nd, 2025. From the very beginning of this journey I was greeted with most caring and compassionate individuals starting with admissions and financial aid. They made signing up for the program so easy and answered every question with confidence. I went home with every bit of information that I needed to start my new beginning. They were absolutely great!
When I started as a freshman in the 101 program my educator was Miss Allie. She is seriously the most incredible woman filled with so much knowledge and compassion. Her beautiful spirit made learning easy and I have so much respect for her because she was always willing to answer questions and show us anything that we were curious about learning. I learned soooooo much in her class about the science behind everything and I carried that knowledge into the next phase with confidence. I had clients that thanked me for teaching them about their skincare needs and conditions and itâs all because of what I was taught from the very beginning. I feel truly blessed to have been able to start out with such a great teacher as a solid foundation for my education in this field. Our rotation was luckily small and there was a time when there were just a few of us, she made it her duty to pump us with all the information that we needed to be successful in the next phase. Because there were just a few of us it made it easier to get more personal time and information out of her and she was glad to do it all. She would even step up to help us with our chores every night which made her an even greater leader to look up to. Even after I phased out of her class I could ALWAYS go to her for help with questions I had on how to deal with certain clients needs and she was ALWAYS willing and glad to help. I absolutely love and adore Miss Allie for the incredible woman, educator and human being that she is. She is a gem and Bellus is so lucky to have a special person like...
