J Street Market — Local services in Sacramento

The owner has always been nice to me and my mother, who lives nearby, but I don't think we will be returning.

Here is why: I was within about 7 feet of some very loud hammering, because they decided to build their wooden alcohol shelf near the drinks aisle during business hours. I'd estimate that the sound was about 125-130 decibels, straight into my left ear. This startled the hell out of me and was actually physically painful afterwards. I covered my ears and walked out.

The average mark up at this store is about 20%. We've probably spent a couple thousand dollars here already, just because of the convenience. But if they carelessly expose their customers to things like hearing loss, it just isn't worth it. What is convenient or even considerate about that? What will it be next time?

As a regular of the store, I'm extremely disappointed that this happened, and I'm writing this review so that the people in charge can understand that this actually happened and stop doing it to their remaining customers. It's 10 hours later and I still feel a deadness in the upper frequencies. It just isn't worth going into a store that does these things.

A staff member ran past me while I was in the aisle on my cellphone and knocked it from my hands, shattering the front glass on a $1500 phone. The guy actually looked at me, I showed him the phone, and then ran behind the counter. I walked up and said hey man you just broke my phone by not paying attention, and his reply was that "it's too bad." .... There's no way that could have been his response, but yes it truly was. I said hey we need to do something about this, which triggered his inability to speak any more English apparently, as if that somehow makes it okay. I sent an email to my attorney already and will be following up tomorrow to ensure that it is you problem and not mine. What a way to lose a customer who is quite literally your neighbor as well as the owner of a business less than two blocks from you. I can guarantee that you will lose business for this, and will work extremely hard to put your store down to everyone...

Wish they had the awesome sandwich counter of times past, but other than that this place is really worth supporting! Sure, it’s pricier than Safeway, but it’s way more convenient and it’s supports a family-owned and operated business. Very happy to have them in the ‘hood.
