I used to love coming here with my 4 year old son to dig in the back and look for the “treasure” they put back there. We are locals so would go whenever we could go downtown. It was a fun activity for my son to do, even though it’s $10 dollars to dig for fake pirate coins. Apparently we found too many things one time and this lady said she wanted to take pictures to show the owner what to “restock on” I knew she was lying and annoyed we found as many coins as we did because it meant she actually had to get up and do her job for once and go bury “treasure” again. When we came back today I knew there was going to be a rule change. Sure enough they said it was still $10 dollars, but for only 15 minutes to dig. 15 minutes to get the metal detectors and find a spot and dig through sand to find something. I had to explain to my 4 year old that we can’t dig as long as we wanted anymore because if we find too many things, the poor staff members would have to unfortunately leave the oasis of air conditioning and trek to the outside, a place they seldom visit, and dig 4 inch deep holes, to put coins in. You are welcome for all the money we have spent, all of the people we sent to your “museum” as well. Locals keep your business afloat during slow seasons, you should never bite the hand that feeds you. I draw the line at this “museum” being too lazy to restock the sand pit and instead would rather tell a 4 year old he has a time limit to dig.

Read moreSt. Augustine, FL. Steve loves “The Curse of Oak Island” and the idea of treasure hunts so he loved this compact, full-to-the-gills museum.
It’s a two-story building with a little theater upstairs showing a narrated exploration of the Titanic; many fascinating finds from real shipwrecks; artifacts from all over the world in superb condition; intricate models of ships from the past; and many items used on the set of the Titanic movie.
Downstairs is a wonderful gift shop and a room where you can use a metal detector in the sand and keep what you find!
I loved the gift shop. It had replicas of coins, necklaces, and other finds from shipwrecks. There were toys and books for children, holiday ornaments, replicas of ships, magnets, shirts and all sorts of paraphernalia.
If you are a history buff you’ll like this museum and shop.
By the way, you don’t need to pay admission to...
