9th Street Designer Clearance — Local services in San Francisco

After going to 20+ different furniture stores, arriving at 9th Street Designer Clearance was such a relief.

What I particularly love: Customer Service- 2 things:

1. Timing: They help you when you have a question/or even before you know you have a question. (It’s like they have a sixth sense.) They leave you alone to browse, when you are still thinking/just wanting to look. 2a) Solution oriented (regarding items in the store): I was looking for a dining table that could fit in a small space yet get bigger if I had company. Michael showed me an expandable table that gets bigger by turning it like a lazy susan. Then gets smaller, by turning it the other way. (It looks like a normal table- would never have known without him pointing it out to me.) 2b) Solution oriented (bigger picture): Michael spent time looking at my space in pictures on my phone, and tried to provide design ideas or solutions (even if it meant suggesting looking at other places for more affordable options for items they don’t carry much of- like locking office furniture.)

Quality: Seems very good. Just got my items so only time will tell. That said, the pieces I got feel comfortable/solid, and look beautiful.

Price: It’s fair and competitive. If you are looking for the cheapest (for example, Craigslist, a big box store in Emeryville, and a membership only warehouse center in SF come to mind), this is not it. But if you are looking for something more convenient, where items are already assembled, with a larger selection, and you can sit on/measure/touch /and see before you buy, with a modern/contemporary look, this is a great place.

Value: It’s a great value for the service, the quality/style/size, and the competitive pricing.

Other Things to know: Paying: It’s cash or check only. They will let you put down a small deposit, and then pay in full at delivery. Parking: It’s street parking (metered-takes credit cards), but usually easy to find a spot in front. Delivery: That’s a separate cost. Which one do you get- display or new? (Sometimes I ended up getting the display/the ones in the showroom, and other times, I got the item new out of a box.)

Yep, Jerome and Mike are the superstars of the furniture world. When we arrived at the address, we almost didn’t walk up the steps because my partner had recent hip surgery, but he limped up, and we couldn’t be happier.

Jerome greeted and schmoozed us around the showroom, which has an abundance of unusual and exciting pieces- it seemed that it was more for his love of their furniture than trying to sell us anything. We’ve been looking for attractive, comfortable, sturdy, and affordable dining room chairs and found a vast selection. Two hours later, in addition to buying dining room chairs, we purchased side chairs and a large dining room table. I also kicked myself because they had a state of the art sleep sofa, and I had purchased a more ordinary one somewhere else six months ago.

When it comes to the purchase of any item over $500, I consider myself a very good shopper and I never buy anything on the same day so that I can reinforce my decision to buy or pass on the item.

After a few minutes of browsing, I was greeted by Jerome who was the owner. Normally, I am usually reluctant to have a salesperson nearby until I have had an opportunity to look around to see if I'm interested in anything and then I might ask questions if I'm really interested. Because I have not bought furniture in more than 15 years,this time I decided to let him show me what was available.
