You are always greeted at the entrance with a smile and a hello, an there is always someone right at the desk to get started helping with any problem. Mary's place is one of the best, if not THE best day center for homeless and needy women, and women with children in the greater Seattle area. It is only 1 block away from the Metro Transit #70 route. Breakfast and lunch are served daily, The "family style" way of serving meals, takes us back to a more civilized time when we would have meals with our families all together at the table. It is as a whole, a much more relaxed and laid back space then all the other day stop in places I have been to. There isn't the fighting, drama and bulls#!/ that goes on in most of the other places. They offer a variety of arts and crafts groups, games, self help, wellness groups and excerzize classes. It's almost everything you could ever need all rolled into one place. They have a donation room in case someone needs Emergency shoes, pamts, socks etc. You can shower, do free laundry, (They supply you with everything u need for all of it, and haba packs to take with you that usually have wipes, tp, sanitizer etc.) watch movies, use the laptops that are available for e-mailing & other socual media for keeping in touch with family and friends in other states or countries. The ladies that work and volunteer here are beyond amazing and will move heaven and earth to get whatever it is that you need, or done... They are right there digging in the resource listings for whatever help agency you need. They have medical professionals that come in to help ladies that maybe don't have a doctor get the care they need to stay healthy. I have been to pretty much all of the " walk in day centers" for women around Seattle and Mary's Place is by FAR the best of them. I Have and will recommend them highly to anyone that needs help.
An last but not least there is "BON MARY'S". Ladies can volunteer their time and get points for doing chores and helping with many other things around the center. Ladies can then take the points and exchange them for items in the BON Mary's store. Clothing shoes, make up, perfume etc. Nicer brands and things than just what is donated to the center by local businesses and residents. Women have a hard enough time when we are homeless.... Mary's Place makes our lives just a little (Or sometimes a...
Read moreMary’s Place (both the shelter I went through AND the admin offices!) is a true blessing. I went from a very low point in my life to being housed, healthy & happy - and I couldn’t have done it without them.
No organization is perfect, but the people here treated me with grace and compassion. They offered a lot of practical support, and even emotional support, too! I remember one night when my infant was really fussy, and I was overwhelmed as a new mom. One of the front desk staff and the center director hung out with him for a few minutes so that I could compose myself. There were many more staff in my time there who went way above what they “had” to do - everyone seemed truly invested in helping.
Living in a shelter is a lot less hard when there are staff who are happy to see you every day - the cheerleading I got made me hold onto hope. I hadn’t really believed in myself at any point in life before, because I held a lot of negative messages that took away my self worth. But the MP staff made sure I got it back! I think that’s a crucial piece to housing/life success that most shelters are missing. People can’t succeed as easily if nobody believes in them - and at MP, they made it so clear that they had faith in me. It’s something I will never forget.
As for the admin offices staff, I’ve communicated with them a few times, usually regarding gift cards they’d tried to mail me. The employees were always really friendly, and they made sure I got the gift cards! :)
Overall, if anyone is reading this and on the fence about calling/going in - it’s worth it. There’s going to be hard parts and road bumps, but MP helps you get to your destination, anyway. And if anyone is considering donating, volunteering etc - DO IT! Best possible organization...
Read moreThe only reason I am giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because it does provide a place for homeless familys. MOST of the staff is lazy and take out their frustrations out on familys that have no where else to go. It is filthy, they allow kids to stay up tell 1230am and the adults can't go outside past nine pm. There are signs of a massive amount of embezzlement and fraud perpetrated by the staff and possibly the organization itself. If they saw how we were treated ( feeding children expired yogert, no kitchen staff on Sundays, rationing the expired donations...), They would wonder where all their money is going. And if you have to come here, bring all your own stuff. They say not to worry about that stuff, but we have yet to be given blankets, boxes that everyone else has, and I asked for ice for my wife's head injury and was told, "we don't have ice" eventhough there is an ice machine on premises. The staff will treat you like you are...
