ESCAPE! Nightmare Mansion — Local services in Virginia Beach

Let me start by saying that I’m part of a group that goes to haunted attractions and escape rooms and we review them. I’ve been to hundreds of haunted attractions, and dozens of escape rooms. I’ve seen it all in the past 5 years of doing reviews… or so I thought. Escape rooms are generally fun, slightly stressful scenarios that expect you to do things and think in ways that you wouldn’t normally to solve puzzles, complete tasks and get to different stages in order to “win” and, well, escape. ESCAPE! Nightmare Mansion is unlike ANYTHING I’ve EVER experienced before. It’s an escape haunted attraction. I won’t give anything away, that would be disrespectful to the effort put into this experience. I haven’t been scared at a haunted attraction since 2008. But I was literally heart pumping terrified in this escape room. There became points were I forgot this was a game. I thought I saw things that I’m still not sure if they were there or not. My wife was so terrified at one point she almost lost it and began crying because she honestly believed she was going to die. I thought she was going to be attacked and put my body in front of her as a shield honestly expecting to be hurt. I will never look at escape rooms or haunted attractions the same way again. This is now the bar in my mind for what can make me believe something different than the reality outside. If you want to be scared out of your wits, do this “escape room “. My best friend and I booked this experience. We both love horror movies and haunted houses and such and my friend had never done an escape room. With a minute of googling I found Escape Nightmare Mansion and all the great reviews. It was all advertised as being very scary so of course we were intrigued!

The owners unfortunately had to cancel my original reservation but they were INCREDIBLY accommodating! They texted me personally and rescheduled me for a day they weren’t even open. This was so wonderful of them to do for us!

I don’t want to spoil anything about the experience but WOW! The effects of the room and the actors just really make it so immersive. We were both screaming and laughing at the same time, having so much fun!

We did manage to escape just barely in time.

Similar to other reviews I will say that physically if you can walk up some stairs and easily stand and walk for an hour or so that’s really all you need to be able to do to succeed in the room. Mentally you need to be able to cope with being in the dark, loud noises, strobe lights and other lighting, and you need to be able to challenge yourself and push past fear when facing some scary tasks. And like any escape room, you need to practice teamwork!

I can never do any other escape rooms or haunted houses because this is my new bar! I’ve begun looking into more intensive experiences thanks to the fun and fear I enjoyed at Escape Nightmare Mansion :)

I was really excited to try this escape room but it was pretty underwhelming. There are much better ones in VB that have better decor, exciting secret openings, more interesting clues, and an actual storyline. This was less of a problem-solving adventure with riddles and clues and more of just searching the room for notes that told you exactly what to do and keys just laying around. Also, the staff was pretty rude, they clearly had a superiority complex about their lackluster room. Another thing we found very strange was that when we got there, we asked to use the bathroom and we were told we would have to leave the building and find one at another establishment and that once we left we would not be let back in. Normally, escape rooms will let you out and back in for the bathroom but they ask you to use theirs before starting to avoid that, this place didn't even give that option. We were also forced to leave our phones, purses, coats, and watches (not just smartwatches) in the stairwell. Normally there would be a designated place in the room for these things. It was like they were so concerned about people taking secret recordings of the "mYsTeRiEs" of the room or something... even though there really isn't anything of interest. I wish we would have done one of the other escape rooms in...
