I am writing to share an experience I had when seeking information regarding a Protection From Abuse order. My intention is not to cause disciplinary action, but rather to encourage awareness and hopefully foster greater sensitivity in interactions with victims who are already navigating very difficult circumstances.
When I spoke with the protection clerk, I felt her demeanor was disgruntled and unhelpful. Instead of asking clarifying questions or guiding me through what I did not understand, she became frustrated with my attempts to seek clarity. While I recognize that staff may work with these processes every day, for those of us experiencing them for the first time, the information can feel overwhelming. Victims come seeking support and guidance during some of the hardest moments of their lives, and the way information is delivered makes a tremendous difference.
I was not trying to be disrespectful—I was simply asking questions because I did not fully understand. The lack of patience left me feeling dismissed at a time when I was already vulnerable.
I hope that sharing this feedback helps to highlight the need for compassion and patience when interacting with victims. A small change in approach could greatly improve the experience for those who are already struggling to protect themselves and...
