Breakfast at Old Wharf

My partner and I LOVE breakfast but we don't get to eat it much in our everyday life, so we prioritize it when we go on holiday. Unfortunately the hotel we were staying at had a pretty mediocre breakfast, so we ended up at Old Wharf and let me say, we were beyond happy. We went 2 days in a row (and would have gone more had we discovered it sooner).

Old Wharf has figured out how to give guests the best aspects of a buffet breakfast (quantity and variety) without losing quality. If you get the Full Breakfast, you can get one menu item hot from the kitchen, PLUS add 3 sides, PLUS you get to take advantage of the continental buffet. It's an amazing deal and ensures you get a hot, well-presented, delicious, filling breakfast while also having access to freshly baked pastries and breads, yogurt and muesli, fresh fruit, cheese, spreads, etc. Everything is high quality and clearly prepared by people who take breakfast seriously. ALSO, a barista coffee is included, and it's GOOD.

Further, the staff were amazing. They were friendly and helpful both days. On Friday it was quiet when we were there, but it was really busy on Saturday and we arrived 15 minutes early for our booking, which was probably annoying, but everyone was super welcoming regardless. The kitchen is open and right next to the buffet so you can see how well-oiled the operation is. Honestly just really impressive across the board. If this is any indication of how the hotel is run, we'll definitely stay here next time...

My husband and I went there on Bixing Day expecting to have a nice seafood meal. We selected $70 pp selection for whatever chef suggested on the day. It turned out to be the worst meal and experience we had in Tasmania.

We mentioned a few things we didn’t eat, and the staff member took our order told us she ‘believed’ there should not be the things I mentioned that I didn’t eat, but I was served the 2nd and 3rd small dishes with things I didn’t eat straight away. The wait staff could not even provide me with any information about what chef would offer on the day nor did the restaurant take any notions of things guests didn’t eat.

TAS oysters were what a lot of people were after when they came to TAS, and we were told by the same staff who took our food order initially that Old Wharf Restaurant was a seafood based restaurant, but they didn’t have oysters on the night.

Every dish in this restaurant seemed to come with unnecessary sauce, it was all heavy and overpowering with sticky sause, even as simple as they described as ‘Green Leave Salad/Fennel/vinaigtette’, there was pretty much no fennel and their vinaigrette was not as described.

From my observation, the restaurant was very unprofessionally managed. The manager seemed to be unresponsive to our concerns, except for Elaine, our table server, addressed and dealt with our needs very appropriately which we highly appreciated.

We’ll definitely not be hurrying back...

We had dinner and breakfast here at the Old Wharf Restaurant as we stayed one night at the MacQ 01 hotel. The restaurant decor is beautiful, the staff were friendly and offered exceptional service, they went above and beyond. Loved it !!! For dinner we enjoyed the oyster kilpatrick and the fig and prosciutto salad for starters. My daughter loved the salad. For main we had the steak, pork cutlet, scallop pie and macaroni and cheese. All the dishes were outstanding. We did order the carrots side dish that we didn’t enjoy but staff were happy to take this off the bill. My daughter would of preferred more cheese on her macaroni and cheese but still enjoyed it. My son loved his pork cutlet not so much the slaw but we ordered fries for him. My hubby enjoyed his steak it was cooked to perfection ! I had the scallop pie and I loved it... the trick is add more curry sauce to the pie and this made it delicious 😋 Breakfast was great, my hubby and I enjoyed the baked eggs and bagel with salmon and scrambled eggs. The kids had room service as they like to sleep in and enjoyed poached eggs on toast with avocado and the continental breakfast. Best of all coffee was made to perfection. 10/10 for this...
