Good food: terrible service from owner.
24/07/22 at 12am. I went here with a group of friends (3 of us in total) looking forward to a great meal as we had been here before and the service from the employees was amazing. However, this time the owner (given the formal attire and instructing the other staff members) treated us with the most appalling service I have ever encountered. We were pressing the "call for service" button on our table after not being served for 10 minutes, to which there was no indication that a signal had been made. So, we tried again many times in the span of 3 minutes as no sound, nor effort, was made to come to our table.
We looked over at the stairs to the owner leaning against the staircase (we were sitting upstairs), literally 'death-staring' us and proceeding to yell at us in front of everyone there- it was a full house. The entire floor went silent as she quite literally screamed at us for pressing a service button that had no indication in the slightest that it works. We had not known that the bell noise is received downstairs and not in the upstairs reception. She yelled at my friends and I to "stop playing with the button!", to which I responded, "sorry, we had no clue as there is no sound". She rolled her eyes and tutted at us, then walked off to another employee (speaking in Mandarin I believe), extremely passionate and aggressively, ending with "don't play with the button!", pointing at us.
Following this, she asks us how many people (we were already sitting at a table), then immediately pointed to one next to us (previously occupied) stating "go sit there!" and walked off. We then got up and left due to the extremely poor treatment and utter disrespect the owner treated us with.
P.s I never leave bad reviews as I understand they are not always necessary, but this was an extremely terrible experience for both myself...
Read moreI had the pleasure of dining at City Garden Chinese Restaurant recently, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us with warm hospitality and attentive service, setting the tone for an exceptional meal.
We ordered a variety of dishes, and every single one exceeded our expectations. The plain porridge was a perfect example of simplicity done right—rich, silky, and comforting, it served as a great start to our meal. The stir-fried beef with mixed vegetables was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection, with the beef tender and the vegetables maintaining a crisp texture. The fried dough was light, fluffy, and delicious, adding a delightful contrast to the meal.
One of the standout dishes was the stir-fried octopus. It was fresh, succulent, and seasoned beautifully. The portions were generous, and every bite was bursting with authentic Chinese flavors. We tried so many dishes, and not a single one disappointed—each was prepared with skill and precision, showcasing the restaurant’s dedication to quality.
The restaurant’s ambiance only enhanced the experience. We opted for the outdoor seating, where we could enjoy the lively atmosphere of the area. With lots of people around and a nice evening breeze, the setting was perfect for a relaxed yet vibrant dining experience. It’s clear that City Garden Chinese Restaurant is a popular spot, and for good reason.
Overall, City Garden Chinese Restaurant is a gem. From the fantastic food to the excellent service and the lively ambiance, everything about our visit was perfect. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Chinese cuisine in a welcoming and enjoyable environment. We will...
Read moreNot very nice and will not return!
The morning glory smelt like wet dog, got no idea what was in it we couldn’t distinguish what it was whether it was onion or burnt garlic or more than likely something else?!
The noodles with egg sauce looked like the egg white wasn’t cooked but the man assured us it was chicken gravy, it was similar to chicken and sweet corn soup consistency but didn’t look very appealing, looked like vomit in fact!
We ordered the sizzling Mongolian beef (I think it was called) and salt and pepper chicken and the beef was ok, the chicken tasted nice but some bits were pinky inside. I think just the cut of meat used as it wasn’t raw but very off putting- it wasn’t chicken breast anyway.
Egg fried rice was probably the best thing, but the veg in there didn’t taste very fresh, like they were frozen veg.
I requested for some dishes to be cooked without msg which unfortunately meant no flavour at all… would not recommend this place at all and we left feeling quite nauseous.
I think you have to be a die hard chinese cuisine fan, or enjoy MSG to like...
