3.5 stars Food: udon shop at lunch. Simple menu. Udon or rice. Warm or cold udon. Small or large portion options of Udon. Also, have seasonal udon options. Udon are freshly made by a machine. Normal presentation. Portion wise, piled up with various fillings. Soup was nothing special. Udon was well cooked. Good price except some seasonal dishes. Spicy Miso Pork Undon: served warm. Minced pork is ok. Good portion of regular udon. Soft-boiled egg is well cooked. A lot of bean sprouts, spring onions and chives. --- 7.3 /10. Mini Teriyaki Chicken Rice, $6.5: rice was well cooked. Chicken and sauce was just average. --- 6.5/10 Pre cooked Tempua skewers ($3.5) were not so crispy. Free udon scrum or Tempura scrum is crispier. --- 6.3/10 Seasonal udon or rice may not in good value. Mini Ox tongue rice, $6.5 is a small portion of the thin ox tongue slices (not like the picture on the ad) mixed with shredded beef. Misleading. --- 3/10
Service: Look at the menu on the board. Follow the queue. Place order to the udon chef directly, grab a tray and wait for cooking, get the udon and move side dishes at the Tempura section if you want, or move to the cashier and pay. Most Udon served immediately. Then, find a spot to dine or go to the self service area for hot green tea or water, utensils, sesame, and Tempura scrum. Return the tray after finished.--- 6.6/10
Environment: located in a alley. Open kitchen. Able to see udon making. Very Packed. Usually many customers. Come early to get a desired spot easier. Menu on the hard boards at the entrance. Briefly tell how to order and pay. Clean or dirty highly depends on customer's self discipline. Usually, return the tray with used bowels by customers. Recently (10/2022) staff will come out to clean the tables and collect the used bowls. More tidy and...
Read moreThis place is truly a gem. Not going to lie I walked in with low expectations as it’s down a secret little alleyway, but as soon as you head into the restaurant you are greeted with friendly staff who are making udon noodles and broth right infront of your very eyes. I knew it was going to be good when I realised I was the only non-Asian in the whole venue. I went up and ordered with the help of my friend. Spent $25 on unlimited green tea, a healthy serve of honey chicken and sweet and sour pork and a chick block serve of beef udon which had me leaving the place like I had been to my grandmothers for dinner. The food was excellent and the fast order style meant after 8 minutes I was blowing on my hot tea and mixing fried onion into my udon, no messing around. We found a seat on one of the communal tables where we stayed for about 45 minutes while we attempted to finish the plethora of mouthwatering, ambrosial and succulent dishes infront of us. Once we were laden with noodles we brought our trays to the front and left, only to have our empty seats replaced with the next Asian family 2 minutes after. We truly had an excellent experience dining with Hifumyia and I 100% recommend to anyone who is in dire need of a Udon style meal. If anyone has any questions on the process of ordering or recommending any dishes. I would be more than happy to provide a detailed description on the logistics and hardships of ordering at an Udon restaurant for the very first time. I will ever be brought back to the warmth and vibrance that this special place provides, you can be sure to see me again here soon on a Saturday afternoon after a tough game of sport. It soothes my joints and calms my muscles. Have the...
Read moreWorst experience ever in a Japanese establishment!
I saw in their website and online reviews about their commitments of community based hospitality but I was so shocked by the person who took our order (apparently was told later is the boss!) He was very rude and impatient to us! It was our first and definitely last time there. We politely asked if there's udon noodle and he retorted "Only for lunch. You should have known before coming". Our whole table was shocked! Was there with my parents and not one to create a scene we quickly ordered a few items as we were so hungry then. If you don't really know what to order from the menu, just don't bother to go to this place. The boss doesn't even bother to talk you through the menu. We ask for recommendations and he just pointed to the 2 pages of food items (there are more than 40 items on these 2 pages). In case you are wondering who is this guy? He is the one with tattoo on the neck. The cashier lady, who is much friendlier, told us he is the boss.
I really like the Japanese culture and Japanese food. This restaurant is by far the worst experience I have had in Australia and Japan! The restaurant name is called Udon Noodle House and when you click on the website, its all about Udon Noodle??? It is such a shame as we can't feel their culture of Udon, or the warmest greeting from the staff as what they stated as their commitment. I definitely did not feel the usual warmth and politeness Japanese people and their service...
