Called up at 7.40pm because I was craving some sashimi and wanted to make sure they could still accept me without a booking. Thankfully, even though they were closing early due to being quiet, they were willing to stay open for my craving. So, on my table for one at 8pm, I started my little sushi train journey 😁 everything was delicious and fresh despite being end of day, and when I ordered plates for myself, the presentation was on point and beautiful. The chef and front lady were wonderful and both were incredibly kind despite my late coming - honestly, in their shoes I would have been put out for having to stay back and clean later, but they were really sweet and gave me a warm feeling of hospitality. I ordered the Salmon Sakura with Tobiko, which was overflowing with Tobiko! (The presentation and its cute delivery by train was so delightful - I’m only sad I didn’t get to film it or take a picture before I demolished it… 😂 😭) I also ordered the Salmon Sashimi!! The salmon sashimi pieces by the way were DECENT! I thought ordering 8 would have been too little for my appetite given how small some places make them lately (possibly due to inflation… but my experience at Hi Sushi has been nothing short of generous! (And the 16 pieces I ended up ordering were definitely well and above my food limit haha) I’ve loved it here and I will be coming back ❤️ Edit:/ I almost left without paying because I had such a wonderful time and got caught up in the great convo and in writing this. LOL! 😂 Kudos to the wonderful team who looked after me tonight.

Hi sushi has really upped its game in Geelong, being the only conveyor belt sushi in town they stand out from everywhere else and deliver an excellent dine-in service and grab and go sushi at the front of the store. They offer iPad/tablet ordering at your table which is delivered either by a robot (the coolest way) or by the cat express train that runs along the top conveyor belt right to your table. Whilst this is a pretty normal experience now for people in Melbourne the atmosphere is contagious sitting in a smaller town and seeing the faces of the locals light up enjoying something they are not used to seeing. It's amplified by such a friendly mum of the store who collects your plates, who I assume is the owner; and had such a nice chat with us. The sushi is wonderful and has an umami kick to many of the dishes. Some of the plates were served with some dry ice underneath them, the chef really prides themselves on the presentation. I will absolutely be returning on the regular my girlfriend and I had such a good time.

I think if you've never tried sushi or Japanese food before, you might want to give Hi Sushi Geelong a try. However, if you're familiar with Japanese cuisine and sushi, you might prefer another place. It's not an authentic Japanese restaurant despite having a sushi train. The food there seems to have been sitting for a while, with limited varieties, and you'll likely need to order specific items separately. Additionally, the owner might try to promote their sushi, which I personally find innovative, especially considering they combine fruits with sushi, a rare concept in Australia. On the other hand, I strongly do not recommend their ramen. It's simply not authentic Japanese ramen—the ingredients and even the boiled egg differ significantly from traditional Japanese ramen. I've taken photos of their menu's ramen and what was served, and it's evident they don't align. I won't be returning to this establishment.

Although others rated that restaurant better, we were not so lucky.

We ordered on the street to sit in front of the restaurant as we all like Japanese food. The staff member struggled to remember my simple order, I had to ask for serviettes and chop sticks otherwise I wouldn't have gotten any. The same goes for the soy sauce. Part of the food (some chicken roll) was very tasty, the content of the other two boxes was certainly not fresh and was just ok.

After finishing to eat (I assume the tables in front of the restaurant belong to them) I asked where I could leave the empty containers and rubbish - not to leave them on the tables like most other guests did. Answer: "I don't know, we don't have bins". I found that really strange and understood now why several outdoor tables were dirty and loaded with rubbish. Not exactly how you would feel invited to stop to bite something and do the right thing to help them. The lady behind the counter could have easily suggested to hand it over to here - as I had it in my hands looking for the bin.

Instead, she opted for the lazy way and suggested that this is now my problem. I took it to a public bin 50m further down the road. The other tables remained dirty; my "little hint" didn't work.

All in all, it was just a place to kill some hunger, Macca's would have been a better and cheaper experience in...
