Cafe San Marco — Restaurant in Salzburg

It is really hard to believe that such a lovely city like Salzburg can have in a central area of the city such a bad restaurant. The reviews rating it as "Terrible" and "Poor" are totally accurate. Imagine: afternoon, 34 degrees, very hot and no rain for several days. My wife and I stop at Cafe Sacher. My wife gets their famous sweets, absolutely delicious. I do not order anything, I am looking forward to a beer at a terrace. And a few minutes later I see Cafe San Marco. What a misfortune... Half of the tables are occupied. The rest are in the sun, no shade from umbrellas, remember.... 34 degrees. So we sit at a table, and move the chairs slightly close to the tree, just two feet or 60cm, trying to catch some shade. Just a few seconds later the witch from the bar comes flying, and tells me that I am not allowed to stay on the grass. "What grass...? I ask. There are just a few yellow, dry, barely surviving grass patches, and only two legs of the chair sit on it. So I have to move the chair off the yellow, dry, almost unexisting grass. Next comes the questions: ?What do you want?" "A beer please", I dare saying. "And you?" the witch is asking my wife. "Nothing for me, thank you" said my wife. Remember, she just finished the sweets from Sacher... "Nothing?" the witch asked. "You have to order something, otherwise you cannot sit here.", the witch continued. Remember also, plenty of tables available... Well..., there is more to this story. You can imagine the rest. Just stay away from this place. It...

We were saved by a lovely experience at San Marco - we had tried two previous places for food but had been met with an uninterested response. Not so at San Marco, escaping from the rain and a thunder storm, we were met with a warm and invested welcome. Buki appeared to be running things single-handedly (we later saw other staff delivering food and collecting glasses). He immediately offered us a glass of water while we decided on our drinks and food. The attention he gave all the customers was amazing - he literally didn’t stop moving between the bar area and the customers including the additional seating area across the road. He was constantly checking in to ensure customers were ok. We enjoyed both the food and drink and especially enjoyed the conversation with Buki. Reasonable prices for pasta dishes for lunch. Food was not bad but service was a bit slow. There was only one guy working and doing everything. So we had to wait for a fair bit before he came out of the kitchen so we can pay for our meals. We were kind of in a hurry so had to wait at the bar and tried to get his attention. Half way through our meal, a group of customers came in and sat at one corner, just inside the indoor dining area. A couple of them started smoking and it really became unbearable for us to stay with all the cigarette smoke. I wish they'd let all the smokers sit...
