⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — A Perfect Introduction to Vienna’s Coffeehouse Culture

Café Prückel was the first stop on a coffeehouse tour my friends and I took through Vienna with a local guide — and what an introduction it was. Located right in the heart of the city, this café delivered the perfect mix of charm, history, and warm hospitality that defines the traditional Viennese coffeehouse experience.

⸻

Atmosphere:

Café Prückel has a classic, old-school charm that immediately sets the tone. From the vintage décor to the elegant lighting and cozy seating, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and take it all in. It’s easy to see why locals and travelers alike keep coming back.

⸻

Coffee & Sweets:

This was my first real Viennese coffeehouse experience, and it absolutely set the bar high. The coffee was excellent, rich and smooth, served in true traditional style. We also tried a selection of pastries and sweets, which were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented.

⸻

Experience:

What made the visit even more enjoyable was the laid-back, unhurried vibe. Despite being a popular spot, it never felt rushed or overly touristy. It was simply a genuinely pleasant experience — a great way to ease into the day and soak in a bit of Viennese culture.

⸻

Final Thoughts:

If you’re new to Vienna’s café scene, Café Prückel is a fantastic starting point. It’s elegant but approachable, traditional yet welcoming — and it set the perfect tone for the rest of our coffeehouse tour. Highly recommended for first-timers and coffee...

I lived in Vienna for 17 years, and then I moved to Canada, where like in the US, the servers are trained to smile, and be kind to their patrons, and I had forgotten how incredibly unfriendly a waiter in a classical Viennese coffee house can be! Granted, they have to deal with tourists that do not understand or speak the language all day, that they are clueless, perhaps even rude, but still!! They act like they are spoiled movie stars! My waiter was wearing this incredibly elegant suit, tall, very handsome, grey eyes, dark hair, (i sat on a table near the window on the Schottenring), and he did not smile even once, and did not say thank you when I gave him his money, although it included a 15 % tip over the final bill, in a city where the service IS included -a fact that not everyone knows-. This made me so incredibly happy to be living in Canada now! And yes, in case you are wondering my German is nearly perfect, and I am "Frau Doktor" here, so it's not that I am an ignoramus, and he had to deal with someone rude and horrible. It's just the way he was... On the other hand, the food is fantastic, all the pastries are super fresh and the coffee is outstanding. If you do not mind the rude waiter (and I think the other one was kind of nice, I looked at him to see if he was rude too, and I think he wasn't: sit on the table of the shorter guy with the spiky hair), by all means! Experience this Viennese typical...

The worst experience I had in Vienna, I never felt so bad in a café.

First, the waiter simply ignored me. There was a line and he started talking to the person behind me and let those people go ahead. Even so, I stayed because I had seen a documentary in my country about this café and really wanted to try it.

After this episode, another waiter walked past me and said it was full, when there were four tables free. It took someone else, who I believe was the manager because he wasn't wearing the same uniform as the waiters, to say no and find me a table.

To place an order and pay, the staff walk past and simply ignore you. It's very difficult to place an order and pay! The staff member who served me was rude the whole time and acted as if he was doing me a favour.

I only managed to have a typical coffee because the desserts I wanted would take at least 30 minutes.

A big disappointment. In fact, two people left the table next to mine because no one came to serve them.

I don't understand why they make documentaries promoting the café if they don't want to welcome customers or tourists. I just feel sorry for what I think is the manager, the only person who was nice to me there and got me a table.

I don´t recommend going there. There are so many nice places in Vienna that really welcome us warmly. It´s not worth goint to a place where you´re...

My friend, who I have not spoken at length in person for almost 5 months, brought me here to catch up and chat. This is my first traditional Viennese coffee house and I love it. First things first: Cafe Prückel is located in a touristy part of Vienna and this cafe is basically an institution in the city given how old it is so it is always bustling with people here. Better have a reservation to avoid waiting. The reservation can be done online now. Second, the food and the cake is good and priced well: I got a klare rindsuppe mit frittaten, a kleine apfelsaft gespritz. I got chocolate cherry cake which was a bit dry but the cream on top of it was delicious. This is all 13 euros which I think is very reasonable. Third: cafe ambiance is nice - high ceilings, vintage decor, and some tables with couches. I found the people reading actual paper-based newspapers to be a charming sight and so nostalgic. Fourth: I always got the impression that staff in traditional Viennese coffee houses are grumpy but that is absolutely not the case here in Café Prückel. Our server was a charming older man who I found to be polite and accommodating. One can also sit for a long time in this cafe. My friend and I chatted for 3 hours, and it was all good. Fifth: I have no idea if cashless payments are allowed here. We paid by cash. I highly recommend Café Prückel!

The cafe was recommended to me by my hotel proprietor when I asked where I could get the best "Apfelstrudel" (apple strudel) locally, and he was most enthusiastic recommending Café Prückel. I was not disappointed. The place was quite packed, mostly with local people (a good sign), but I was lucky to get one of the last tables. The apple strudel was amazing, and a bit unexpectedly, with a huge whipped cream topping. Normally that would be too rich for me, but when in Vienna.... I also opted for a speciality Maria Theresia coffee - which is a large black coffee with orange liqueur - quite delicious, but in combination with the strudel and the whipped cream it was too sweet. The cafe also offers cakes to go, which I took advantage of. The only scary moment came at the end when the bill arrived and I found out that the cafe does not accept credit cards. The waiter was kind enough to say that there is a cash machine in a shop next door, but luckily i had just enough cash left on me (not yet spent on Viennese Christmas souvenirs), to be able to pay the bill. Afterwards I looked around and saw that there had been a small notice saying that the place is cash only, but for poor tourist sake it could have been stated more obviously in English with large capital letters :).
