Summary: Positives: Location, decor, ambiance, service. Negatives: None worth making a fuss about.
Decor/Ambiance/Service. Positives: Attractive restaurant built from and above the old cellars that cover most of Vienna. Location amazing, close to Stephansdom. Decor, lighting and layout are excellent and relaxed. Staff smartly turned out and very polite. Service excellent and we tipped around 10%.
Negatives: The knives we were given to cut the pizza’s were blunt and it was hard work cutting the bases (unless you argue that the bases were tough). The wait for the bill was slightly irritating particularly as service had been very prompt and the restaurant was well under capacity.
Food: ‘We took one Da Capo Pizza (12.50 euro: on the basis of assuming that any plate named after the house would be one they were proud to prepare and would therefore represent a good reference for the quality of the kitchen/chef), one Quattro Formaggi (11 euro), one Lasagne con ragù d`agnello, salsa di formaggio caprino e funghi cantarelli 14.50 euro and a childs portion of Spaghetti alla carbonara 6.20 euro.
The Da Capo pizza was generously covered with prosciutto ham and was certainly attractive, however I didn’t find it special in any way. As a rule if the individual ingredients are better than the complete dish, then its worth questioning whether the dish was really worth making. To me the ham seemed wasted on this pizza. Perhaps a little harsh as it was certainly o.k., but I preferred the Quattro Formaggi, which seemed a much better rounded pizza (although Grandma said it was too salty; a point I personally contest). The presentation of the Lasagne was pretty good, but I didn’t find the dish any better than average. The Spaghetti carbonara, was interesting. The spaghetti itself was a cut above supermarket spaghetti and it was perfectly cooked. The sauce was also very tasty and I would say good, but as it cooled it started to feel a little gluey.
My overall impression of the restaurant was good, largely due to the quality of the venue and the excellent staff and service. I’d rate the food as average and overpriced. I ordered ‘a beer’ without looking at the menu and was served a beer that tasted good, the head was good and the cost was way too high. Perhaps there were cheaper beers on the menu I...
Read moreSo, 8/3/2024 I wanted to take out my wife somewhere nice for womens day but didn't made a reservation because we didn't knew what we wanted to eat. As we get in, a tall bald guy with a tattoo on his hand runs towards us and waves his finger in a "no motion" very aggressively without even saying hello and then ask us if we have a reservation in a very g bad tone, we say no and he moves away ranting about everyone coming at the same time. By the way the whole restaurant was empty and very few tables had the "reserved" indication. We didnt understand what we was supposed to do, he didn't told us to go or to stay. Then another guy asks us if we have a reservation we say no and he asks us to follow him downstairs. We go downstairs, the whole floor was empty. Anyway we made our order, the staff had a very bad attitude, they was constantly making us feel unwelcome. My wife ordered a Pizza Margherita which came after 35 minutes and the Carbonara I ordered came 10 minutes after the pizza which was an awful foul from the restaurant. The carbonara was very creamy but tasteless, I even asked for some chilly to maybe get some taste out of it but they refused to give me. The pizza was ok but nothing special, just a basic Margherita. The what was appear to be a manager was secretly sipping beer in the corner every now and then and the staff was constantly fighting with each other and the atmosphere was very awkward. It was the worst experienceI ever had in a restaurant and for the prices I was expecting alot more, atleast...
Read moreWent there for dinner on Christmas Day.
We ordered 3 Carbonaras, 2 with spaghetti and one with penne. The waiter brought us 3 Carbonaras with spaghetti and told us they didn't have any penne 1st foul. They didn't ask if we wanted to reconsider the order, they just brought what they wanted. 2nd foul. It's very likely they did that to not use another saucepan because we ordered a few minutes before the kitchen would close. 3rd foul and most important. The Carbonaras were like plain spaghetti with omelette and gaunciale. The egg was overcooked and the outcome was a very dry "carbonara" of mediocre taste.
The origin of all this was that we reserved a table at 21.00 on Christmas Day and we weren't told that we would only have 1 hour until the restaurant closes. Our fault was that we didn't ask or check about the working hours and just assumed that as any otherl normal restaurant they would expect a table to spend 2 hours there.
The waiter was somewhat pushy and came off as rude, probably because he was overworked but it didn't make the experience any better. We also ordered pizza and risotto which were good (nothing special though) and a salad which was ok.
Overall the food and the experience were subpar and not worth the price. Given the reviews, I'd blame it on the occasion of Christmas but if I found myself in Vienna again I...
