Stopped here a few years ago while visiting, and it just so happened to be during the World Cup. The place was crowded with locals and tourists alike. We were seated at a table for two between 2 very excitable football fans.
The place was full of energy, fun and laughs, it was a great time.
This time, we stopped by for dinner and was happy to see familiar faces in the restaurant. The decor changed somewhat, but the food is still as delicious.
We usually start with hummus, but decided to try the garlic dip. Whipped potato puree with garlic and olive oil drizzle. Served with a grill toasted pita. Fresh tasting and the warm pita / chilled dip combo was delicious. If you typically order hummus, give this a try.
The typical plates are souvlaki, either chicken or pork, come with rice or fried potato slices. Better than fries in my opinion. Crisp, not soggy and go well when combining meat, veggies, spud and tazki on one fork full.
The gyro is well seasoned and flavorful. Spice it up with their spice powder. Mix of red peppers, paprika and a little heat. Not over bearing, but a tasteful companion.
Desert was yogurt with Greek honey. Simply delishous.
Priced well below other venues in Vienna and worth...
Read moreThe food did have a nice taste, but there were some issues. I've never seen a gyros plate with meat sliced so thick, and not any kind of rotisserie in sight. It seemed like it was sliced and fried in a pan, with the spices. The meat was spiced well, and tasty, it didn't resemble any real gyros I've had. The inside was pretty old, a little dirty looking, and very warm. The waiter was more concerned with joking and trying to be funny than decent service. A few times he was outright insulting us, and then didn't come to the table for at least half an hour, despite the place being pretty small and he was nearby often. They don't offer draught beer either which in Vienna is disappointing. You can't pay by card, only by cash, and your bill is written on a small piece of paper, with no receipt. It makes it difficult (especially as you have your menu taken away, and website menu has the wrong prices) to properly figure out if you paid the correct price.
The waiter did offer us some Ouzo with the bill, which was nice for me. However my wife hates Ouzo but the waiter wouldn't allow her to not drink it, and pressured her into having it. A cheeky waiter can be good in a place, it's fun. But not when the other basics...
Read moreLately for few weeks, I've been hearing from my colleague saying about Greece food. So I put my foot out today to try one. After a simple search in Google I found this place which is few hundred metres away from stephensdorm at stephensplatz, a iconic attraction in Wien. The restaurant is of medium size type having seats arranged inside and outside during summer. I was sitting at outside sharing a seat next to a Old couple - likely to be a tourist . My lunch started with Greece Bier Mythos then a mammoth version of Greece main dish. The food is big enough to fulfill two moderate eating person. I tried my best to put everything into my stomach but failed at the end. Few leftovers. Meanwhile I noticed I was the only one eating still, among the face I saw while joining. All were left...that shows how slow I was... but I knew I had to go slow to complete that heavy meal. If you have been invited by any Austrian then without asking you get atleast one Greek food on the table. They are many Greece restaurant in Wien, only thing you have...
