We found this Thai restaurant in Canmore by chance on a last minute decision to hop over to Canmore from Banff town center. We're from the San Francisco Bay area so ethnic cuisine/restaurants are plenty. However, I felt like we might be in good hand for authentic Thai food if papaya salad is on the menu.
We wanted some more veggies since we've been on the roads for days with unhealthy choices and with the intention to call for the Salad rolls. Due to naming convention of the restaurant, we ended up with fried egg rolls instead. Our oversight but would have been happier with the non fried cousin as that's what our body were craving for.
By the way, they have 5 levels spicy/heat and they're not kidding about their heat level. We opted for level 5 which caused us to sweat profusely but that's exactly what we're looking for after traveling in the Canadian cold (Californian speakinghere). I loved that it's Thai native spicy level and I appreciated this truth heat level. Some other Thai restaurants, even where you emphasized Thai spicy level, they're so reserved that the food is spicy level 1 or 2 at most (bland) so there's literally no heat in the food which take away the yummy of the food. If I ever return to the area and dine here, a level 4 would be comfortable for us.
I'm really happy to see brown rice is offered here. We had Thai red curry the day before elsewhere so we went with shrimp Tom Yum instead. A tad salty for our taste bud if eating by itself but still decent to pair with brown rice.
We went with the traditional chicken pad Thai. They used white chicken breast meat but marinated it well that it doesn't dry out and pretty tender. Surprisingly, the portion is very generous. I liked their house made tamarind sauce cooked with the pad Thai. Just the right balance of sourness from the tamarind and sweetness from the sweetener and not overwhelming amount of runny ketchup or overly sweet compared to some others places.
Overall, very decent Thai restaurant that is far away from the big metropolitan area but still got all the authentic ingredients such as kaffir lime leaves, chopped lemongrass and sliced galangal in the...
Read moreOne of the best Thai places we've eaten in Canada! It even beats Pai. Who thought a place in Canmore, AB can serve some of the best Thai in the country! We were even comparing to our favorite Thai places in the States and Amsterdam. Truly a gem and if we had this on day 1, I know we'd be eating here every night. It all started when my husband saw Chang's beer which is very difficult to find anywhere. So we already knew we are in for something authentic. We ordered papaya salad and Thai red curry. You have to order rice as an extra as the red curry doesn't come with rice.
The lovely waitress warned us not to do spice level 5 as it would be too spicy and she wasn't wrong. Spice level 3 was just perfect and she gave a pretty great chilli oil in case level 3 wasn't good enough. The chili oil is very flavorful. They cannot customize the papaya salad, for example remove fish sauce. But it wasn't too fishy which was good. Service is excellent. Not only do they seat you promptly even if they are busy but the food also comes out really fast which is great for hungry hikers like us. The restrooms are clean and the restaurant is simple and elegant with pictures of Thailand as the wallpaper. If we are back in the area, we will certainly...
Read moreNot Kid-Friendly – Poor Service and Questionable Food Quality 👎 💩 We visited this restaurant with two families, including young children under 12, and the experience was incredibly disappointing. First, the sushi platter we ordered was completely stale—definitely not fresh and not worth the price.
Even worse was the customer service. The owner was extremely rude and unprofessional, especially once we had already paid. It felt like the hospitality completely disappeared after payment, which was shocking. The way we were treated was simply unacceptable, especially in a place that claims to be welcoming and Canadian.
Also, be very careful about the billing – they don’t clearly mention if the tip is included, and you might end up double-tipping if you’re not paying close attention. This lack of transparency is frustrating and feels dishonest.
Bottom line: this restaurant does not live up to the standards of good service or hospitality. I won’t be returning, and I strongly urge others to avoid it as well. No one should have to feel uncomfortable or disrespected when going out to enjoy a meal,...
