The Calgary ramen restaurants scene is getting pretty crowded. 5S17 is yet another ramen shop in town. I guess to survive in this kind of cuisine one has to be unique, to have something special so customers want to revisit.. For 5S17 it means the combination of poke and ramen. The ramen I tried was $18, a bit above the ramen going price in Calgary. The taste did not stand out, but good enough to entice me into trying other menu item, the poke. Back to the ramen, the broth was flavorful and I finished all the soup, the squid ink ramen was bouncy. Half an egg was included with the noodle but it was nothing special to write about. The ramen was meant to be spicy but we did not even taste any hint of hot spice used. Just asked for hot sauce ($1) and it was good. The red tuna that came with the poke were generously portioned ($20). The downfall was the rice, a bit on the hard side, similar to rice left overnight, if one grows up eating rice, one can relate. Parking is typical 17th Ave, that was partly my motivation to try out their poke on the same visit. Unless I have a strong reason to visit the 17th avenue again, I will not return just for the 5S17 food. I will find a place with easier accessibility. Service was a bit slow, only a single waitress/host was working on the night we visited. I was debating whether this should be a 3 or 4, I just put...
Read moreGreat place on a busy street. Came here with our little family of four to get out the cold on a Sunday at lunch. Had read an online review of the top Ramen places in Calgary for 2018. It didn't disappoint.
Chef and waitress/hostess were very friendly. They even changed the only TV that was playing some Japination to something more kid appropriate. Very appreciative of that as I have a 3 and 9 year old.
We started with Fries with Mayo. Excellent. Chives sprinkled on the fries were a nice touch. It was a good appetizer to start while we waited for our Ramen.
Kids shared a Traditional Tonkotsu and I had the same with an extra egg. Broth was flavourful and not too salty. Noodles were Al Dente (or qq as my wife would say). Wife had the Chili Goma Ramen - It had just the right amount of spice without being too over powering; you could still enjoy the flavour of the broth. Only negative is the pork was probably too thick and as a result a little tough. That being said, not as much fat as in other places so that's a plus.
Like I said, great to have Ramen on yet another cold day in Calgary. Will definitely come back again. There's a good selection of appetizers and other main dishes that I'd like to try.
Place is small but comfortable. Great service -...
Read moreGood food, faux hipster/upscale presentation. 2 poke bowls ($14/ea or $20 for the 'Mt. Fuji') plus a sushi burrito ($12). We asked for the spicy tuna and salmon in the burrito to be substituted for non-spicy versions. Presentation has very indecisive, the burrito was served very much like a regular sushi roll, sliced into 5 or 6 pieces, while leaving 2 huge pieces that were too big to eat in one bite (I tried, with varying degrees of success) but too small to not disintegrate after a small bite. I think they did this because they knew we would share it, but at least stay consistent one way or another, slice them all the same size or leave it as is. It was tasty nonetheless. The poke bowls were the same story. Ingredients were great (a healthy portion of avocado always adds brownie points) but it was served with all the ingredients separated neatly and did not resemble a poke bowl in the traditional sense. Maybe I'm used to the sashimi sliced into cubes and the chef mixing your choice of ingredients well by hand. The house sauce was interesting, using thinly sliced granny smith apples, and the dish itself was again, tasty, but was dominated with your choice of starch (rice, ramen, or...
