I'm a big jerk chicken and patty lover. I have been craving Jerk chicken, with rice and peas side of cole slaw, drizzled with oxtail gravy and patties since moving here from Toronto. I was excited to try out the Jamaican joints here. My order (Uber Eats) - I ordered:
2 Oxtail Gravy sauce 2 Patties and a Pop - Tallawah! Beef patty • Chicken patty • Diet Coke 1 (BUY 1 GET 1 FREE) Jerk Chicken and Rice!
Chicken was a bit confusing and deceiving mentions "2 for 1" but it's actually 2 snack size boxes, not sure why that's the case. The chicken was really boney, very few meats portions, looked dry and old, You can tell because it doesnt fall apart and the meat has become tough for sitting to long in a heat to keep it warm. The chicken had. a good amount of spice, but unfortunately came short of the savoury depth, which the spice overwhelmed due to the lack of flavours there. The chicken was charred all over (black chicken) where the sauce/marinate was complete burnt/over caramalized rather than a nice even char and brown mix throughout. Portion wise, the cole slaw ratio was about a pinch portion. The slaw was more on the boiled/steamed vegetable side, similar to vegetables from a soup rather than the creamy mixed fresh salad I was expecting. The rice and peas - lacked peas, rice was dry and clunky.
Oxtail gravy was decent, more on the oily side and less of a sauce - but it adds moisture to the rice and chicken which was lacking in moisture and depth.
The patties were good - but not the texture I'm used to getting. The one I had felt more like baklava where the layers flakes apart. Overall the patty despite the unfamiliar texture for a patty (personally, im sure there are other variations), the flavours were there and it was my favorite of the orders. (though over priced at $5 each)
I cannot speak to in person dining, but I may be interested in coming by in person to try one day.
I hate to give bad reviews to mom and pup shops esp learning about the changes/challenges they undergo with personal life & quality control. I assume the owners are passionate foodies and I have heard good things from long time customers and ongoing feedback, as of right now, that has been my experience on the "ordering out" side.
2 stars due to disappointed texture, flavour, portions - 1 extra for understandable circumstance. I would try again, in hopes of getting a better experience/taste for the real quality that I feel like could be there.
Hope everyone else enjoys the food they offer. best of luck to the owners on their continued...
Read moreI recently visited Brawta Jerk (05-30-2025) and had a mixed experience that I feel is worth sharing. I placed an order for a curry goat roti, festival, jerk pork, and a jerk chicken/oxtail combo along with two drinks. I was told there would be a 15–20 minute wait, which I was okay with since it was just after 11 AM — but I ended up waiting 32 minutes.
When I finally got my food and checked it in my car, I was immediately disappointed. The jerk chicken was dry and only warm, clearly not fresh. Some of the oxtails were burnt (which I didn’t notice right away), the festival was just okay, and the roti was shockingly thin — my wallet had more heft to it than what I was given.
I brought the roti and jerk chicken/festival back. To their credit, the staff were understanding and offered me a refund for the roti and a fresh order of jerk pork. I also decided to order a curry goat meal with white rice, mac salad, and coleslaw instead.
While I was waiting again, I was told that the oxtail was indeed burnt, but I chose not to return that dish. When I got my curry goat meal and tried it, it was phenomenal. Great flavour, tender meat — the kind of quality I was hoping for from the start. One small hiccup again: I received rice and peas instead of white rice, but the dish was so good I let it slide and enjoyed every bite.
Final Thoughts: The service was polite and they handled the situation respectfully, but the inconsistency in food quality and accuracy really took away from what could've been a great first impression. If the rest of the dishes had matched the quality of that curry goat, this review would be glowing. For now, I'd say Brawta has potential — but consistency is key, especially when the wait is long and...
Read moreJust moved to Halifax and I miss Toronto so much… Anywho! Tried this place out and I was very pleased with the customer service! Went in Sunday afternoon and it was quiet (much like Halifax). I ordered the small bbq chicken with festivals for $13ish. Portions are smaller than I’m used to and the rice & peas was very bland in my opinion. It’s a nice, quick stop for a bite to eat, didn’t wait long. Definitely will return :) mostly due to the amazing customer service. The oxtail will determine the real updated review.
UPDATED REVIEW : June 2023 I flew in from Ontario and after a long day I decided to get food to go home as I’m a couple hours away from Halifax. I have never felt more disappointed from a “JAMAICAN“ restaurant. I called ahead and was given an estimate of 25mins, I arrived in 23mins and waited about 10mins. SERVICE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I tell myself that every time I get great customer service it’s because it makes up for something. And this time, it didn’t make up for the amount of money I felt was wasted. PRICE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ $53 was my total for 1 large jerk with rice and peas, 1 large oxtail with rice and peas, extra oxtail gravy, 3 beverages and a festival. FOOD: I’m unsure where to start. The rice was ok. The vegetables were my kind of “just cooked enough” but the protein is a disrespect to where I was born and raised. The jerk chicken was a propane bbq (maybe) if not baked with a bit of seasoning. The THREE pieces of oxtail in my LARGE oxtail were a 6/10 and for $18.49 ! Overall, my $30 parking ticket was better than this meal. If you’re not and never been to a Jamaican restaurant, enjoy. If you are any BIPOC I highly recommend just cook anything. 9/15=...
