This place definitely has potential, but unfortunately the service fell short during our visit today. I went with my mother and my son, and while the food was decent in parts, the lack of attentive service made the experience underwhelming.
Upon arrival, the attentive host greeted us warmly and sat us right away, which gave us a good first impression. Our server, Josephine, was friendly at first and seemed attentive—or so we thought. We ordered a bottle of sparkling water that took about 10 minutes to arrive, even though the restaurant only had four tables seated at the time and she was only handling two of them.
For appetizers, we had the BBQ bacon (very good), the bacon-wrapped scallops (cooked to perfection), and the burrata with tomatoes, which unfortunately arrived with the entrées instead of beforehand. During this time, Josephine never checked back with us—we had run out of water and also wanted to order drinks, but couldn’t get her attention.
When the entrées arrived, all of our dirty appetizer plates and empty cups were still on the table. The mushroom risotto was disappointing, as it tasted like it had been made with mushroom-flavored powder; we only managed a few bites. The burrata was overly salty, possibly due to misplaced seasoning. To make matters worse, Josephine offered us pepper with the burrata but never brought it—I ended up having to ask the host, who kindly provided it right away. The sliders were tasty and generously portioned. The tuna tartare was another highlight.
Throughout the meal, Josephine spent most of her time in the back and never came to check on us again. Another server, who wasn’t assigned to our table, kindly stepped in to get us drinks and olive oil, which we greatly appreciated. Had the service been better, we likely would have ordered dessert and more drinks, but by then we just wanted the check. That took another 5 minutes to receive and an additional 10 to pay.
With only four tables in the restaurant, it was disappointing to see such inattentive service. Sadly, we left no tip for our server—though we would have gladly tipped the other waitress who went out of her way to help us.
The Keg clearly has potential: some of the food was very enjoyable, and the host was wonderful. However, service makes or breaks a dining experience, and ours was not up to par. We were in Niagara for three days and had excellent service at every other restaurant we visited, so it seems the issue here is more specific to this location.
Make your own decision, but for us, with so many great restaurants in the area, we’ll be going...
Read moreJust wanted to say my thanks to our server “Manuel M”. I have a thing when it comes to “The Keg” and making reviews, but was very impressed when it came down to our server as we dined in at this location. “Manuel” spoke with politeness and knowledge of the menu, and charm, trying to make the sale but not being overly aggressive with it.
To the keg manager at the time, she was also very polite and helpful, and feels like someone you would like to work with. I will also note that “Manuel” receives 5 votes each from my wife and 3 daughters plus myself for choice scheduling. @Manuel if you don’t reach out and I’ll make 5 more burner accounts for my family on your behalf. (Jokes) but really, my kids first time at the keg after immigration to Canada this year was an enjoyable experience for them and the falls so you have all my praises to what you guys are doing over there.
All wasn’t perfect as we did need to wait for our table dispute it looking like a slow Sunday night at the falls. Hostess looked confused or nervous as they noticed we were not too pleased for the wait time to be seated, but after learning this location has been only opened for a week now and that they don’t even have their patio tables / chairs, I can let it pass as a soft opening and training in progress.
To the busser / young man clearing our table near the end of our meal, it always feels great to have a clear / clean table while dining and a tip / advice, when clearing plates and bowls from the table. do so when able take away what you can manage avoid placing fingers in the dishes when clearing even if the plates are clean and guest are still around. Example was the kids paste bowl on its serving plate, you don’t need to use your finger into the bowl to pinch the plate to clear them, just lift the plate with the bowl and the bowl will be remove with the plate at the same time (with balance and experience).
All in all (as mentioned) I do have a thing when it comes to the keg and being a newly opened location. But my family enjoyed themselves as the ball started rolling and also helps when you don’t get destroyed by the casino. I wanted to put down my thoughts being what I know about the keg and my experience this time around, the keg will always be my go to for a reasonable price quality steak meal (compared to a full on steak house) with a clean upper class feel. It just shows that the quality of the staff that are the faces of a establishment can and are just as important to the food and or product...
Read moreAfter attempting to make reservations at a different location of the Keg, and finding their was only bar seating available, we easily made reservations at the new location of the Keg. Positive #1. Every time slot was available on a Friday evening, when making reservations a few hours ahead. We arrived about 15 minutes early, and because it was so empty, were able to be seated right away. Positive #2. Having said that, the hostess tried to seat the three of us at a high bar table. We had a 91 year old who's birthday we were celebrating, so, we asked for a normal table as the bar table is too small for three dinners and too high to get on the chairs. That was disappointment #1. We were seated, but with the Keg's move, so went the view (of the falls). Disappointment #2. Yay, we go to an expensive restaurant for a nice dinner, and there's a tv mounted on the pillar two feet from my table. Sorry folks, I didn't want to go to a sports bar. That was disappointment #3. Our waiter was efficient, positive #3, however, lacked any sort of personality, disappointment #4. We enjoyed the complimentary bread and butter, positive #4. The elderly guest with us asked why none of the staff was smiling. My guess, is that they aren't happy with the changes either, and not being busy on a Friday night of beautiful weather, they wouldn't be making much in tips. The mood and atmosphere were terrible. Disappointment # 5. My and my partner's dinner's were delicious, with the wonderful vegetables we chose as our side, positive #5, however his meat wasn't cooked quite as much as asked for. The older person's meat was described as rubbery, disappointment #6. Positive #6 was that the waiter realizing it was a birthday celebration, brought a lovely piece of dessert on the house. So, (knowing ahead, it's a pricey restaurant), we did not order appetizers or extras. basic small 6oz steak with one side each, and one drink each. Bill without tip, $196 and change. Unfortunately, and sadly, it wasn't a positive enough experience for us to return. No longer a classy establishment to celebrate...
