The Keg Steakhouse + Bar is a Canadian-owned chain of steakhouse restaurants and bars located in Canada and the United States. I had dinners at the Keg New Westminster and White Rock locations before. It was a fancy place and expensive food.
Yesterday, my boyfriend took me to the Key Steakhouse downtown location. It was our first time having food at this location. We had such a great time there. We arrived at the restaurant around 5:30 pm. Since the location is on Dunsmuir St right on the center of downtown Vancouver. It was super busy. We had to wait for 15 - 20 minutes to get in.
This location has two floors and includes the dining room and bars. It's very large and convenience for people to dine out at. The whole environment was in modern design and dark color background. Super fancy and luxury. After we got in and sat down, the server brought us the menu and began to serve drinks.
We both had Saturday Special Easy Rider (1oz) for $5.00. The taste of the drink was very is clean and bitter-sweet. It was my first time having this kind drink. Tasty!
We ordered Calamari to share at the beginning. The Calamari is a little bit expensive $14. It seems like the regular food price, not for starters. The food came out fast and fresh. It made by lightly fried vegetable and Calamari. On the side, it serves with ginger garlic sauce and Greek feta sauce. The ginger garlic sauce is our favorite. The Calamari is firm and white with a mild, slightly sweet, almost nutty flavor. Small fried squid are often firm and chewy, which can take some getting used to. But all that chewing isn't for naught: like most seafood, squid has many nutrients. Dipped it in the Ginger Garlic Sauce, the taste was awesome.
Free. Bread and Butter are free at the Keg. Soft warm bread added the butter. So delicious.
My boyfriend and I both ordered The Keg Classic Dinner which is Steak + Salad + Accompaniment.
My boyfriend started with a Caesar Salad.
Then, he had Filet Mignon bacon wrapped steak with mashed potatoes. The steak was 7oz, well cooked. On the side, it served with gravy and some vegetable, such as green beans, red peppers, and mushroom. I had a bit of the steak. The taste was great.
I had the house green salad started. It was in a super large portion. The vegetable was fresh. With the Italian salad dressing, it was delicious.
I had $37 Teriyaki Sirloin medium cooked steak. On top of sirloin steak marinated in Keg Teriyaki. I had the same on side Since it was medium cooked, the meat was very juicy.
We didn't order any dessert later. Since the food was all in a large portion. We were super full. The server was nice and friendly. Always came over and asked feedback about the food from us. The food was delicious. The price of the food was expensive. But, it was in great quality and quantity. It totally worth the price. If you want to have a nice fancy romantic date, I would like to highly recommend the...
Read moreOver all, The Keg does not disappoint. Last night my friend and I stopped in for dinner and had to wait 15 min - ish for a table, which is fair.
The waitress brought water and very thankfully kept it coming, leaving a decanter on the table. I had the prime rib, with garlic mashed potatoes and the onion curls. My friend's daughter had the keg burger.
I was disappointed to se a fair amount of fat along with the actual meat of the steak. I could have sent it back, true, but I didn't want to waste the food. That would have served no purpose except for delay our dinner. The garlic mashed potatoes were delicious as always. I could have done without the onion curls. A side of sautéed vegetables would have complemented the dish, which I could have added; likely for a an additional cost.
My friend's daughter commented that the burger was greasy. She wasn't fond of the pickles, but wasn't informed how it came or if there were modifications she would have perhaps liked to make.
As to the service. We were asked once how our food was, I guess that's okay, sometimes more than that can be felt as a bother, I'm not sure why. I think I somehow expected the waitress to swing past once more to ask if we perhaps wanted anything other than water and to see that we were still doing alright? I honestly don't know why but I felt a little abandoned.
The waitress did bring the water quickly and took our order right away, so that was nice. I can't remember if the offer of dessert was made or not, either way, my friend and I didn't really have time and we didn't have room. I was pleased though that when asked for the bill, it was brought promptly. I was surprised to see that the tips start at 18%, but then some places have the tips in descending order (something I do not like, but that's where you just need to pay attention and read everything). The Keg DOES NOT do this (tips in descending order)
The atmosphere (deep breath, and slowly release). Personally, I'm not disappointed with the lighting as it does set a classy, romantic vibe. The seats, though not at all uncomfortable were on the low side and difficult to actually get out of. Anyone with a prosthetic leg (my husband is an amputee) or mobility concerns would have a potentially difficult time managing this.
The music - yes, music is to be expected in a restaurant, but it doesn't have to be that loud. I realize it's part of the whole package of The Keg, and it's not exactly a family restaurant, but I also don't think that the music needs to be as loud as it is.
I would say if you are looking for a place to have drinks with friends and some fantastic food - The Keg is defiantly the place to go! I'm not sure I'd choose The Keg as a place for a quiet, intimate dinner. But...
Read moreThis keg has long been a favourite of my friends. They have a great happy hour and when we all worked downtown, we spent a lot of time here after work.
We decided to go for our annual ladies Christmas outing. We booked for 3 PM so we could take advantage of the happy hour.
The day before the reservation, I received a call confirming even though I’ve already confirmed it online. I was told that we would only have two hours for our table. No big deal- that is standard especially around this time of year.
We were seated promptly at 3 o’clock, and we were the only people in the dining room at that time. Our server seemed a little nervous and it seemed to take a really long time to get everything out. We ordered tequila shots and I had to ask for lime and salt to go with them, which seemed odd. We had to request the bread And finally after we’ve been there for over 45 minutes we asked if we could order our meals.
At some point, our server disappeared altogether and someone took over our table. We weren’t told anything about this until we asked where he went and were told he left because he had a headache.
Nothing was said about the time limit, but our new server was definitely trying to rush us through. We had a separate bills and the bills were wrong three times. Again, no big deal, but most of the time seemed to be spent with the wait staff sorting things out so we felt like we just didn’t get the keg experience that we used to. And it seemed a little odd that we were now being rushed when our server didn’t even offer to take our order till we were like halfway through our sitting.
It wasn’t terrible, but it just wasn’t what we were expecting. I doubt we will pick this location for our next get together.
Food was...
