Bakehouse Hong Kong: A Modern Take on Tradition, But Does It Deliver?
Bakehouse is one of those places that gets a lot of hype, and I finally had the chance to see if it lived up to the buzz. After a short wait in line (definitely wouldn’t wait more than 10 minutes), I tried a few of their signature pastries, including the famed sourdough egg tart, the salted egg and caramel bolo bao, and the beef rendang pie.
Let’s start with the egg tart—arguably what Bakehouse is most known for. It was fine, but nothing to write home about. The sourdough crust, while inventive, didn’t quite work for me. It was chewy, which makes sense given its sourdough base, but it clashed with the smooth, creamy custard. The contrast in textures didn’t feel harmonious, making it a well-executed idea that just didn’t land.
The real standout for me was the salted egg and caramel bolo bao. A fun modern twist on a Hong Kong classic, it hit all the right notes—sweet and salty, with a perfectly crunchy top. My only complaint? The filling was too solid when I was hoping for something creamier. Still, it was the best thing I tried.
The beef rendang pie had potential but fell short in execution. Rendang is known for its deep, rich flavors from slow-cooked spices and coconut milk, and this pie just didn’t capture that essence. It was good, but it lacked the intensity and complexity that makes rendang such a standout dish.
Overall, Bakehouse is worth checking out if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way or wait in an excessively long line. The pastries are creative, but not all the innovations work. A solid stop for a quick pastry fix—just don’t expect every bite to be...

Each bite of these egg tarts is a symphony of flavours, striking the perfect balance between sweetness and sheer yumminess. The pastry is flaky, the filling divine, making it a delightful treat for any food lover.
It’s no secret that this place draws crowds, and with good reason. Be prepared to wait in line for your turn to savour these delectable delights. The queues can be lengthy, but trust me when I say that the anticipation only adds to the experience.
During my visit, I couldn't help but notice the numerous customers purchasing boxes of these egg tarts in one go. It's a testament to their irresistible appeal and undeniable popularity among locals and tourists alike.
One thing to keep in mind is that there are no sitting areas available, so most people opt to purchase their treats to go.
❤️ A little tip: For the ultimate enjoyment, indulge in these egg tarts while they're still warm, ideally right after purchase. The contrast between the warm pastry and the creamy filling elevates the experience to a whole new level.
In conclusion, if you're a food lover in Hong Kong, look no further than this establishment. While the queues may be long and the wait inevitable, these heavenly egg tarts makes it...
Read moreFirst branch of Bakehouse, if you live or work nearby, it worth to try if you have time. The bakery located between a steep street and the 「Central to Mid-Levels Escalator」just after Tai Kwun. If you want to relax after purchase the bread, you can lay on the sling chair inside and enjoy the meal. As a regular customer of Bakehouse (twice a week since I live in N.T.) , I was happy that there is another location for me to buy even though there is still a long queue to wait at the new store. EGG TARTS is my favourite one because it's so sweet and crispy when it's hot. However it's also famous among all the customer so many people queue outside the store just waiting the egg tarts to be baked. Besides of egg tarts, CROISSANT is also a must because it's the bakehouse signature before egg tarts appears (I think). As a reminder, if you wanted to visit either Wan Chai or Soho branch after 2, you may need to wait about 15-30min for takeaways. If you needs to wait for egg tarts, it's count on fortune because there is limited number of egg tarts on the baked plate . However , please don't blame on any staff even though you can't purchase anything, they are just staff to help with their shop regulations , not responsible for delivering...
